Well, we arrived in St Neots around 14:30, ostensibly to resupply and fill up with water. As we came up to the Priory moorings, which have the water point, we saw there were two other boats moored in such a way as we couldn't access the water point. We moored on the end of the pontoon and had a word with the other boats about creating enough space so we could get in to fill up, no problems. The bloke in front of us said if we cast off, he would pull his boat back so we could moor in front of him and access the water point, so this is what we did. Whilst manoeuvring back in to the jetty there was screeching from within the engine bay and I suddenly lost drive...!! Not being able to arrest my, albeit very slow, forward motion the narrowboat in front acted as our brake. Fortunately, both boaters were ace and pulled us in and tied the boat up. On removing the covers the problem was immediately apparent, the prop shaft had come completely out of the drive coupling. We decided to go into town and do some shopping whilst the engine cooled. Have now sorted the problem, the bolts had come loose, which is a pisser as I had checked them before we set off! I think I will replace said bolts as the nylock nuts seem to be past their best, and I think a bit of loctite wouldn't go amiss either, just to make sure. It was just fortunate it didn't happen where it could caused serious problems....... Got to be thankful for that!👍 Now sat down with a pint of St Peters ruby red ale having decided to stay here tonight now, having had enough excitement for one day.

Those split shaft couplings can be a bit of a pain, especially if the fit wasn't great from new.
The last oneI fitted I drilled and tapped the coupling to take a pair of m10 grubscrews 90° apart along with putting a dimple on the prop shaft.
Belt and braces job.
Fingers crossed that's the limit of your hassle 🍻⚓🚢👍

"nylock nuts past their best" is probably the issue, they aren't supposed to be used twice, but who doesn't?

This is true mate, but given I work in a general engineering/fabrication shop that carries stocks of stainless and high tensile fasteners you think I would carry some spares. I carry plenty of small fasteners, but not much over M6, although that is now going to change. I also can't believe I have no loctite on board........doh!!😳
