At brighouse yesterday, flood board in red, sat about, went for coffee and cake in the old Sagar Marine place. River dropped to yellow, so set off down to Anchor Pit. Flood gates shut! bugger! So opened paddles, waited an age, still an inch to go. Sorted out wire winch, rope and slings and gently pull gate open. In and safe behind flood gates. Checked the level at river lock, middle yellow, so brought boat down, by that time river had gone up well into red. Bugger again! Took a walk down to Cooper Bridge, it's not a plain flood lock into the Huddersfield Broad, but a lock upwards, so that is do able, now waiting for river to drop to yellow and we'll run for it.
Meanwhile we will survive on Blackberries and Custard. I've just a feeling we came across an apple tree in the island between canal and river. Am going to check it out. I may be some time......

Heading for Marsden first, have to get home next Tuesday for a meeting Wednesday morning, pick up eggs and veg from garden. If weather doesn't settle we won't go further east this trip, though we are considering a trip to Stanley Ferry, we don't have the time to get stuck by rising rivers. Nice and peaceful here, a garage/shop down at Cooper Bridge if we need owt. Hopefully river will have dropped by teatime, enough to do the 10 minute run down to Cooper Bridge and off the river.
Met the goat on our last trip, she said say Hi to my sweet foxy. We were sharing with the Safe Anchor trip boat, a duck fell down from the lockside as we were going up, between my cabin side and lock wall. We had no oranges so thought I'd best rescue it. Stopped it falling below gunnels and getting squashed, we managed to fish it out with a big net. Caused great consternation on the Safe Anchor boat, the tripees are often being cared for in the community, alcoholics etc.

It's 51 (FIFTY-ONE!) locks up to Marsden/Standedge Tunnel from the River Calder. 9 to Huddersfield, 42 on the HNC.

So we'll go up to that summit, or maybe not quite to the top, turnaround, come back down, turn left and go to the summit of the Rochdale. A lot of it single handed, I get off the boat and work when the two of us are doing it too. Piss on yer ands to arden em up lads and lasses. No rain forecast tonight so river will be fit to do the last stretch to Cooper Bridge early doors. If my memory serves me right there's an apple tree on the starboard side before Huddersfield. Go nice with Blackberries.

Now ensconced at Aspley Bridge, supplies refreshed at Sainsbury's, bog emptied, coffee at Premier Inn. Now got feet up by warm fire. Got a couple of pounds of apples on the way in, small, probably best cooked. Huddersfield Broad has interesting paddle gear, many have automatic clutch or something, no visible panel and ratchet, just wind up, wind down. Locks are quick to fill and empty. Noreen saw a stoat running across her path. As happens with her narcolepsy this triggered a cataplectic paralysis. Got to her before she dropped! Her meds are wearing off, it's a bit of a bugger! She does wear an auto life jacket and doesn't go out on lock gates to work the paddle gear, much to her frustration.
