I thought it could have been a rigging hole for a weak link. However, I've emailed a copy of the photo to a mate in the RN, so i'll let him do the research. |

Go to specsavers and look again, there's a small hole near the tip of the blade, not the extra hole near the shackle. |

It may have no purpose at all but it would be strange to manufacture it with it there if there wasn't a reason for it. |

There is also what looks like a fitting (shackle?) on the back of the shank in the normal position for a tripping line. It might be that the small hole in the point of the fluke is for shackling down for stowage, or as it is obviously a specialist design, it could be to do with how it is positioned. ...... If it is for a rig or some such thing it might be set with the aid of divers or ROV's

All i can think is the what boat it should be hanging from, well which ship.
A guess that the hole in the spade maybe for a line to lift it ?

Been lurking a while and as I know a bit about anchors I thought I would join in here.
This is not a ship anchor. Its a mooring
anchor which would be permanently laid into a riverbed. The small hole at the end is for lifting it with a crane.
