Not sustainable, of course. The politicians are deaf to this, of course. Rather than incentivise folk not to have children they prefer to set up systems whereby those towards the bottom of the wealth ladder can't survive, unless they have children. Let's not forget the middle classes though, they can now go out to work and maintain their middle class lifestyle, at the cost of the tax payer, who is happy to care for their children while they go out earning. Such is the clamour amongst politicians to increase the population; people don't matter any more, being usurped by 'hard working families'.

I suspect that Professor Stephen Hawking is right when he says that in order to survive the human race will need to colonize other planets.

I suspect that Professor Stephen Hawking is right when he says that in order to survive the human race will need to colonize other planets. I imagine that if the population ever reaches truly unsustainable levels, one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse will come riding to Mother Nature's rescue.

Attenbrough finished his Planet Earth series by concluding that the sustainable human population is one billion. Made sense to me.
Expert studies estimate that the population will actually stabilise (as in level out) at about 19 billion by the end of the century. But it won't, simply because it wouldn't be stable at that level - there will be too much competition for basic resources.
