Moved from Queens Staith to near the Scarborough Bridge yesterday and found that while I have been on Queens Staith some bastard has stolen one of my 30 metre heavy multiplait mooring lines.
It had to be taken by boat as the line was faked out on the river side deck ready for use if needed
I thought my lines would be safe from that kind of thing as they are far too big for anything apart from an ex working boat
There have been no big boats up here while I have been on a river so it must have been taken by one of the smaller ones that were around over the weekend.
It really pisses me off when boaters steal from boaters ..... you hope you leave the scrotes onshore ..... but I suppose they are around wherever you are.

Definitely didn't blow off? I have quit regularly found fairly large ropes in the Thames downstream from Environment agency yards - I assumed they had blown off the work boats kept further upstream. They were open decks but as you have railings I guess its less likely to blow off. Not nice if it was indeed half inched. You need to find who did it an introduce them to Mr Stabby

I hope it's blown off too... THUS far, as far as I can tell, we've not encountered anything but generosity and kindness from boaters... with the exception of a grumpy sod in a lock.
fingers crossed, it turns up floating downstream... if not, then yes... a "date" with Mr Stabby IS required.

I'm pretty certain that it didn't blow off the deck ...... the wind wasn't that strong here and 25 + metres of 50mm diameter multiplait would take some blowing away.
Fortunately I'm not short or rope, I have another length about 30 metres long that just needs eyes splicing ....... it's the principle not the cost, since I have been living aboard I think that is the first thing I've had nicked from either boat. I'm not sure why but you expect higher standards from other boat owners

Sorry to hear about your rope john, unfortunately their are thieving scrotes around and some of them live on boats. I had my chimney stolen, it had to have been a boater, as it was a battered one it had no monetary value. It's never nice to know some one has helped themselves to your stuff.

Vic Waddington who had the boatyard at Swinton, used to have ropes nicked constantly.
Mostly by youngsters who only used them for rope swings.

The larger trip boats based up by Lendal Bridge in York are owned and operated by C&RT's boat snatching contractors, Commercial Boat Services, . . . they may be able to supply you with an almost identical replacement length of rope.

It might be worth going and having a look at said boats john, you might be able to retrieve your rope.

It is so annoying that you can't trust anyone, anywhere anymore, and that you'll have to put locks or a vicious gard-dog on deck to stand a slightly better chance that your stuff isn't blowing off (stolen) by some scrotes.
Something much worse than that happened to me in 1983, when I was on my way to Burgundy on a 38m that I'd just bought in Belgium, before I left there I'd bought 4 lenghts of 50m 32mm ropes as they were much cheaper in Belgium than in France.
When I arrived in Paris I tied up alongside a houseboat, only to go to the best bakery in town to get one of their very heavy rey-breads, before I contined my journey.
This little shopping trip took less than 30mins, when I came back on my barge, I discovered immediately that my beatiful brand new ropes, of which I had used 3 to tie up properly there with the surge of passing barges, the'd disappeared and were replaced by very short pieces of rusty steelwire.
I was furious, asking around if anyone had seen another barge alongside mine for a very brief moment (just long enough to steel my ropes) but nobody had seen anything, I was happy that I'd kept the old ropes that were on the barge when I bought her, and that the 1 rope I hadn't used to tie up with was in a locker.
I am a non-violent person, but if I'd seen the basterd(s) steeling my ropes, I would have been ready to kill, bargees steeling from each other is something I won't accept.
Hope you'll find your rope back John, without any blood flowing.
Peter
