It is so annoying that you can't trust anyone, anywhere anymore, and that you'll have to put locks or a vicious gard-dog on deck to stand a slightly better chance that your stuff isn't blowing off (stolen) by some scrotes. Something much worse than that happened to me in 1983, when I was on my way to Burgundy on a 38m that I'd just bought in Belgium, before I left there I'd bought 4 lenghts of 50m 32mm ropes as they were much cheaper in Belgium than in France. When I arrived in Paris I tied up alongside a houseboat, only to go to the best bakery in town to get one of their very heavy rey-breads, before I contined my journey. This little shopping trip took less than 30mins, when I came back on my barge, I discovered immediately that my beatiful brand new ropes, of which I had used 3 to tie up properly there with the surge of passing barges, the'd disappeared and were replaced by very short pieces of rusty steelwire. I was furious, asking around if anyone had seen another barge alongside mine for a very brief moment (just long enough to steel my ropes) but nobody had seen anything, I was happy that I'd kept the old ropes that were on the barge when I bought her, and that the 1 rope I hadn't used to tie up with was in a locker. I am a non-violent person, but if I'd seen the basterd(s) steeling my ropes, I would have been ready to kill, bargees steeling from each other is something I won't accept. Hope you'll find your rope back John, without any blood flowing. Peter Thats terrible...people are horrible sometimes....my uncle used to nick everything..he build his daughter a bungalow out of nicked stuff and named it 'Fiddlers Rest'..I didn't find it funny at all...Ive had stuff nicked including my wedding album shortly after we were married...got it back covered in beer....the photographers re did it and then when my marriage failed(31 years later) I ripped up every page...as you do!

What a terribly dishonest person this uncle of yours, it was nice of him to build a bungalow for his daughter, but definitely not out off stolen materials. A shame about your wedding album, I never had one, the number of photographs taken at our wedding all added up came to zero. Because of that I missed the pleasure of ripping the album apart after our divorce, I probably wouldn't even have had that pleasure, as I'd made the stupid mistake of putting everything I'd bought in her name, just by chance I had 1 barge in my name, but lost all the rest. You live and learn, what I've learned is that I'm stupid, other people told me so before, but being stupid, I thought that they were joking, which they weren't. Peter Enregistrer

Why did you put everything in the wife's name?
Only situations where I have come across that is when there is a money laundering thing.

just goes to show that there are some not-very-nice people among the boating community. unfortunately we are not all angels.
PS: have you looked in the hedge?
PPS: if it did blow off, let us hope it doesn't end up round someone's prop; from this thread they may be able to identify whose rope it was and claim damages.

No hedges on Queens Staith If it did go overboard it would have to have been scrotes because there is no way the wind we had here could have moved it

John If you wanted to find out if someone has been on your boat you could try rigging up a couple of beam break detectors and wire the outputs to a digital counting device (both pretty cheap on ebay). That way you would have a log of the number of visitors who come through the beams. alternatively wire the output to the contacts on an old phone keyboard (no.2 as no.1 is usually voicemail) then you would receive notification of someone remained within the beam for long enough to activate the no.2 speed dial. Might be worthwhile if you have any suspicions of people boarding without permission. You could wire the same phone so that it could activate a linear actuator and forcibly eject the visitor if you called the phone. NigelMoore will know more and don't take this as gospel or legal advice but I was told by a very knowledgeable person that if someone boards your vessel without your permission you are legally entitled to hang them.

Think of the questions and paperwork ....... I prefer the Mrs Tabby method and concrete boots

You obviously have to put the beam break detectors at the correct height. I suppose you're right that a bird flying onto the boat may happen to trigger it. Its a good point. I think it could be made to work but I have not tried it to be fair. And CCTV would be much more effective obviously .
