Just renewed my licence and was struck by a couple of issues.
The first was that despite several attempts to renew on line, I couldn't manage to complete the transaction. Each time I got to the final 'confirm payment' page, and suddenly 'network error' appeared. Most frustrating.
Eventually I telephoned C&RT and completed the transaction by phone. Fingers crossed only one payment is taken. The lady on the phone was extremely helpful and effecient. Should have phoned in the first place.
The second issue was the price, being £861 after the prompt payment discount.
When I first licenced the boat for 2004/2005 it cost £445. That's quite an increase. I'm very happy the prompt payment discount is available.
I re insured the boat a few days ago, and my premium actually dropped by £9 to £167. Over the same period of time my insurance for the boat has only risen by about £40, and we had to make a claim re a burglary during that time too.

So its more or less doubled in 12 years. I've been paying BW/CRT yearly for 23 years now. It gradually goes up and I have had a variety of different boats but I didn't notice it had doubled in 12 years.
There will be some sort of maths one could do to work out average yearly increase.
Compound interest calculation would do it.

I used 445 and 860 and 12 years and got average interest (license increase) of 5.5%,
Of course if your initial payment of 445 did not take advantage of the 10% PPD then the rate of increase would be higher.

When I licenced my new boat I got the 10% discount plus I didn't pay for the month that was half way through. The seller didn't get that month reimbursed but at least there was no double paying, better than the thieving dvla.

CRT could do with a decent IT revamp but we would of course be paying for it. I did some quick maths the other day when faced with the prospect of the possible divisive increase for non home moorers, or itinerant boaters as I prefer to call us and the possible 1.5m extra should cover it.....
If we all got stuffed by the muted 50% surcharge/increase then maybe they could afford a decent logging system as well and it would show who does and doesn't actually overstay and use the system more.
I have nothing more to say on this subject!(well maybe a little)

Watch your backs on this one. CRT in doing away with it would mean your licence has suddenly increased.

I fear on this occasion, you may be correct.
C&RT would see it as a quick rise, implemented under the guise of fairness to those who cannot pay in one lump.
I hope this is just cynicism, but I begin to doubt it.

I hate fairness.
I wonder if these increases are going to apply to moorings as well?

I think if rises have to come (and let's not kid ourselves) then cancelling the prompt payment would be better than the idea of length v width increases.
A licence permits 12 months navigation. It is then down to the individual how much of the 12 months they wish to use.

Rog Given C&RT's insistence that every applicant for a Pleasure Boat Licence or Pleasure Boat Certificate ticks a box on the application form agreeing to abide by their largely unenforceable and unreasonable T&C's, renewing over the phone has the distinct advantage of relieving you of any C&RT pressure intended to coerce you into ticking any boxes, or agreeing to abide by anything !
