What's your description of a close to perfect day? Mine = today woke up to the sun shining, moored on armcor at a quietish nice and wide spot with the pump out close to empty, the water tank full, all the rubbish bins empty, the fuel tanks full, enough dried hardwood on the roof for 1/2 the winter along with 20 bags of coal, and enough kindlen for the entire winter, 1 & 1/2 gas cylinders. And if that isn't enough while I was having my first cuppa of the day, along comes a wee tender with 2 gentlemen in it, they pull in right in front of us and start doing something with a measuring line; curiosity got the best of me so I asked what they were up to and lo and behold if they aren't carrying out a dredging survey of the area!! That just made my day as we scrapped the bottom in a couple of spots on our way here from our last mooring a few miles back. Fingers crossed CRT will take action on the reults of the survey in the near future. Oh and there's a nice btl of wine chillin in the fridge to accompany the potato & ham scallop I'm making for dinner Only need 1 more thing to make it a really perfect day and that would be for my back to be pain free; pulled it about a week ago and am still in agony with it

Hi Betty !!! Not a perfect day here ....... but not bad, not bad at all I was planning on going back up to York this morning but the river level is on it's way back up and the Museum Garden moorings will be under water by now. I am moored to the visitors mooring pontoon at Naburn, so it's nice and safe, so I will just continue to sit it out here. about 400 litres of diesel on board, 120 Kg coal, and a fairly healthy stack of split chestnut on deck. (green but I don't need it straight away so it can dry out for a couple of months) and there is a stack of ringed trunk on the river bank courtesy of CRT which I will attack with my splitting maul again when I have recovered from 2 hours of splitting this morning plenty of supplies on board and if needed, there is a free bus service to York twice a day from the village Lovely and sunny and the solar panels are banging a decent amount into the batteries All is well in my world

Since we moved onto the boat and I stopped working, just about EVERY day is a perfect one. Even today having done engine/gearbox oil changes this morning, bought some coal, cleaned the stove glass and chatted rubbish to a few passers by and it's still perfect. NOT even the generator which is currently giving the batteries a de-sulphication charge is dulling my mood.
I have wine in the fridge but as I had a drink yesterday, I 'll resist today.
The only fly in the ointment is that I HAVE to get back to working on that ruddy website and a side from hating doing them, I crap at them too.
Perhaps I WILL have some wine!

The only fly in the ointment is that I HAVE to get back to working on that ruddy website and a side from hating doing them, I crap at them too. Perhaps I WILL have some wine! It really is all about the website. A little story... I had a rather dull one for my last venture. It was too honest, too dingy and not of the current fashion in site design. I wasn't doing great so also wasn't charging much per hour - in hindsight which was causing which is open to question. It was in a similar world to narrowboats, there are endless parallels. I had another bash at the website and was pleased with the results. The words were better and it was a bit brighter generally. Soon after, a regular customer emailed me and said politely that he liked my site but... Wouldn't it be better like this? He'd mocked up a home page and it made mine look like a 5 year old had done it. He didn't have time to do much more, but laid out some more typical pages. All done using photoshop which I'd never used before. Cutting long story short, using various adobe free 1 month trials I got the site pilished up and converted to a working website. It was very hard to get it done this way as I hadn't a clue about any of it, but it set the count down to finish! I decided I'd be very open about pricing. One thing that looses you business on the web is "ring for a quote". I trippled my hourly rate from £15 to £45 while I was at it and worked out prices for typical jobs I did, offering them at firm prices in bold type. Result was that my customer base changed overnight from people who cried when told a tyre was worn out to people who'd replace all 4 and what the hell have a set of shiney wheels too. I did less shitty work on rusty heaps for hand wringers and more easy stuff on well maintained ones (oops - should have said vw 70's campers - everything except interiors). My income went up about 8 fold. So...customers...aim high, sell the dream and don't be shy about charging - the more you charge the less they moan about the charges (as long as they know in advance). Sounds mad, but it's true.

Not perfect, but tolerable. Am working every hour possible to pay for next year's boating at the moment. Doing the same run every day, Coventry to Crewe, then back to Wolverhampton then Coventry. Compared to a trip to Moscow or Istanbul it's not very interesting. Have a crappy truck to drive too, a German-built MAN which are known in transport circles as "Hitler's revenge". But, that's what you have to do if you are a skint boater.

I don't see any blood or brain tissue. Fail. I wrapped her up in a bit of old carpet and dumped her in a lay-by earlier.

To be fair you didn't treat us all to a selfie - that would have been a dead giveaway. Even with a clean set of clothes and a shower.

I'm home now so I can post about my day yesterday. It was near perfect. Cleaned the engine bay in the morning. Then went for my fist single manned cruise. Which I enjoyed massively. Four locks and four swing bridges. I spent the night on the vm at sells green. Watching the sun go down whilst reading my book.

A cloudless dawn SAM_1032 by mudlarker2, on Flickr has progressed into a sunny morning, sitting eating my porridge and drinking my second cup of tea in glorious sunshine with the smoke from the Rayburn drifting across the grass.
