Two weeks ago we flew into Manchester Airport and took trains to Huddersfield, Mirfield, Halifax and Sowerby Bridge to get to our boat at 9pm. It had been standing alone for 9 weeks. Happily there were no smells when we opened the doors, and all was dry. The first job was to sweep the chimney with a small scrubbing brush screwed to the end of the barge pole, and plug into the 240v, disconnect our burglar-killing system, and turn on the battery charger.
When we had left the boat we had made it ready to go, so all was in order. This trip was just to Hebden Bridge and back - about 4.5 hours each way.
Sunday – I had to go to Birmingham and back so the boat stayed put.
Monday – we were the first boat through Tuel Lane Lock. Moored up just after and a quick foray to B&M next door to raid the shelves. Then a pleasant chug-chug to Hebden Bridge.
Tuesday – planned to cycle to Burnley along The Long Causeway moorland road but after pushing our bikes for 4 miles against the wind we decided to drop down to Todmorden, and rode back to Hebden Bridge along the towpath. Bell ringing in the evening. at Heptonstall church, high above Hebden Bridge.
Wednesday – walked up Horsehold Road to Stoodley Pike. Back to the canal along the Pennine Way, and walked back into Hebden Bridge along the towpath.
In the evening we called into The White Swan pub in Hebden Bridge which had been flooded at Christmas 2015 but is now back in action.
Thursday – Thetford business and water tank filling, breakfast, then off back to Sowerby Bridge – raining heavily before Mytholmroyd. Stopped in Luddenden Foot to buy a new chimney hat from Quality Stoves, this time a stainless steel one.
Friday – down Tuel Lane Lock, engine oil change, and off to Halifax to have a look at the renovated Piece Hall (disappointing) and shopping, and in the evening off to the Lantern Parade in Littleborough (by train) which had Jim Riley of Thunderboat as the star!
Saturday – getting the boat ready, and our departure back to Huddersfield and Manchester Airport.
