Slow news day today so thought Id post a question that's been troubling me for some time..
Whilst crawling thro a 20MPH village today, it got me thinking as to whether these limits are applicable to cyclists?
If so, how would they be enforced?
How could they allocate some form of 'points' or speed awareness course? What about habitual speeding cyclists... How would the police ban them from the roads thro the 'totting up' process?
Surely some lycra clad 'Chris Boardman' wannabe ponce doing 25-30MPH past schools / shops / kitten rescue centres pose as serious a risk / hazard as speeding motorists and should be dealt with accordingly!

Interesting read, thanks for posting. One of the funniest things I've done when cycling was a few years ago cycling to work at silly O'Clock in the morning, I stopped along a car at a red light and took the chance to have a good old stretch. The cyclist behind was steaming along clearly with no intention of stopping for the red and I unintentionally clotheslined the twat off his bike sending him flying. He then got up and started having a go at me,I pointed out that by stopping at the lights I was correct and that if he followed the law it couldn't have happened, the guy from the car came to my defense with tears of laughter running down his face. It really hurt my elbow, must have been worse for him.

For a start they cant as the cyclist get away with a how ever they want to use the road as it is. light jumping, filtering wrong side etc etc, speeding as questioned.
Granted all are ignorant runts but those that are need seeing to.
I just cant see why cyclist should be classed as motorbikes, reg plate for a start, if the can catch most motorcyclists then why not a bicycle.
Insurance can be either on a single bike or a family policy.
Tax, no point as they will win that one as most pay road tax/fund or what ever you want to call it nowadays.
They cause accidents and get away with the outcome 99% of the time.
What was the OP question............lol

I'd be happy to have a reg plate on my bike, back in the day I used to have the BW license... and display it unlike most of my mates.
I think it stop a lot of people pulling the idiotic maneuvers if there was someway of tracing them.

It's never the scrotes going through red lights or jumping on and off pavements that have the accidents. It's the law abiding cyclist minding their own business going down poorly designed cycle lanes mixing with tragic that get hit. It's the commuter and serious cyclists that get killed around here. I cannot believe for a minute that many accidents are caused by the cyclist. It reminds me of yesterday. In the morning on a local fb page was a post with hundreds of comments all moaning about thieving coppers with a speed camera. A few hours later two ponies were found after being hit at speed. The same people were horrified. Down here the police have started using bikes and are pulling cars over who pass to close. Incidentally, they are also catching cyclists who jump red lights.

Torygraph - 2008
Motorbikes should be banned as part of a plan to eliminate road deaths, a safety expert has claimed. The goal of stopping deaths on the roads has been set by a number of countries including Norway, Australia and Sweden, where the programme has been called “Vision Zero”. But Norwegian safety expert Rune Elvik said for it to happen, policy makers should consider the radical step of banning motorbikes. “If they are serious about these lofty road safety ambitions that have been announced then I think such a discussion is needed,” he said in an interview with Motor Cycle News. “Motorcycling would definitely not be allowed.” Mr Elvik, research chief at the Norwegian Institute of Transport Economics, said motorcycles are incompatible with the target of eliminating road deaths. But his view was dismissed by Craig Carey-Clinch, spokesman for the Motorcycle Industry Association. “He clearly does not understand the contribution motorcycling makes to transport, easing congestion and reducing CO2 emissions. He really needs to get a sense of perspective.”

A but, if we ban motorcycling the supply of organ donors dries up. Gazza, a lapsed motorbicyclist.

What an easy get out. Let's save lives, we will just ban all the Vulnerable road users.
Should start giving due care and attention tickets to anyone that causes an accident.
