I have been watching the programmes 'Gunpowder' being a dramatic retelling of the 'Gunpowder Plot'.
I have enjoyed it, but so far only watched two parts.
In the opening episode Catesby was shown to live at Baddesley Clinton (although the footage was not of that property). Having visited that NT property several times I was confident that Catesby had not lived there. I was equally sure that Catesby owned property at Ashby St Ledgers near Braunston, having walked to view the beautiful manor house a few summers ago.
Consequently I have done a bit of reading and confirmed that Catesby was born at Lapworth (the house no longer standing) and later inherited the property at Ashby St Ledgers on the death of his father.
I wonder why tv programme makers go to such length to recreate costumes, and lighting of the period, and the depiction of the various death sentences, and on other issues simply make stuff up. Surely if one aspect is important to 'get right' than the same must apply to all?
Equally, why are programme makers at pains to be factual in some regards (Mark Gattis playing Robert Cecil inflicted with scoliosis) whilst ignoring the fact that Cecil was famously less than 5 feet tall (Elizabeth1 called him 'Pygmy). I'm a fan of Mark Gattis, but at just over 6 feet tall, the casting is odd.
I am assuming that none of the production team are Thunderboat members on the quiet, but you never know.
I understand that the idiot lantern is just entertainment, but why is it represented as history, if that's the case?
As I said, I am enjoying the programmes, but I get slightly 'niggled' by these glaring inconsistencies and simple untruths.
I know, I know....sad old git
