Just heard the rather sad news that Callie, Mark's companion on the fuel boat Callisto became very poorly this week and unable to move, and following a consultation with the vet, Mark has very sadly had to do the right thing by her and she is now chasing pussy cats in doggie heaven. She was very elderly but it's still sad that we won't see her again when Mark arrives to fuel us up. Sleep tight Callie.

Its always hard to make the decision, but its the best thing for the pet as they can often suffer in silence without any way of letting us know

I acquired a small whippet cross from Battersea Dogs home in 1989 when I was 15. She was my perfect companion until 2005 (after ten years on a boat) when she died on the couch in my narrow boat at Boxmoor near Hemel Hempstead. I was lucky that I did not require vet assistance. I put her body in the gas locker for a couple of days then buried it in a relatives garden. She got old (about 17 y.o.) and died. She did attempt to kill herself a couple of times by going head first into the cut but I blamed that on failing eyesight and I pulled her out. Other than that all was working OK then she just stopped eating then stopped drinking and died a few hours later.
Rip to all good dogs.

Lots of people don't 'get' the companionship a dog (and cats in fact) gives, especially to people who live alone, nor do some people understand what effect it can have when you lose a pet. But I would wager Mark (who I've never actually met) will be gutted to lose such a trusted companion.

Foxy's cat looks like Billy the boating cat.We sadly had to have him put to sleep while we were summer boating. He was 18 & had a brain tumour which caused him to have fits. When he started to fit 4 or 5 times a day,we knew it was time.Miss him every day as he was the most wonderful boy ever.A real character.

Never met Callie but I always think of this when a dog dies, somehow helps me (and I hope others) that it is the natural order of life.
THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way From men and women to fill our day; And when we are certain of sorrow in store, Why do we always arrange for more? Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy Love unflinching that cannot lie Perfect passion and worship fed By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head. Nevertheless it is hardly fair To risk your heart for a dog to tear.
When the fourteen years which Nature permits Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits, And the vet's unspoken prescription runs To lethal chambers or loaded guns, Then you will find - it's your own affair, - But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.
When the body that lived at your single will, With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!), When the spirit that answered your every mood Is gone - wherever it goes - for good, You will discover how much you care, And will give your heart to a dog to tear!
We've sorrow enough in the natural way, When it comes to burying Christian clay. Our loves are not given, but only lent, At compound interest of cent per cent, Though it is not always the case, I believe, That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve; For, when debts are payable, right or wrong, A short-time loan is as bad as a long - So why in - Heaven (before we are there) Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
