My ecofan is placed exactly where the instructions told me to....and if u look at Martins post above then its obvious(well to me) that the heat sensor went off cos without the fan heat rises......

At least we are getting rational discussion here, mind you I did post it as a popcorn moment on the other channel, the usual suspects coming up with the same old twaddle. The fire at home is inset in the hearth, so the fan is pushing air out of an open box with a fire in it. I'm going to try it on the boat. Fire is situated about 3/4 down the boat, with the seating in the front 1/4, all open plan, caravan style. It can get too hot at the front, cooler down the back, so I'll try the ecofan blowing to the back and see if it evens up the temperature, maybe more comfortable at the front end.

I bought one from Aldi a few weeks ago for £24.99. It does seem to have evened out temperatures in the saloon and made it less hot to be sitting directly in front of the stove. In that the blades spin, and are angled, then logic suggests that it must be moving air around, also the blades behind the fan are virtually at ambient temperature (it is the temperature difference between these blades and the fan base which produces thermo-electricity) which suggests that the fan must be moving air past these blades and if it is, then that air must be going somewhere.

Our 'Ecofan' has the chimney flue-thingy behind it so it is 'sucking' hot air from the chimney pipe. I have read that they should be in front of the chimney and directing colder air AT the chimney pipe, thus warming that colder air. I think it's much the same - our fan's action will be bringing colder air to the rear anyway, as it's pushing hot air out away from the chimney pipe.
Quite honestly, if you put some long thermal underpants/leggings on, you'll be much warmer anyway and just see the fan as something moving in the background making the boat a bit more cheery. Like having the radio on - you really think there's someone else there with you.

Thats ok if u r using the ecofan to distribute heat if u r cold but in my case it was to prevent heat detectors driving me crazy ... I do think they work but not gonna try without just to see if the detectors start going off again... Thermals have already been sorted out and are must wear items of clothing here.

Otherwise you shouldn't really suggest the ecofan works as you're putting two and two together and claiming it makes five.

Who's voted late? I've posted an untruth on cwdf, "a recent poll showed that 84% of voters thought ecofans work", when the voting was 10 - 2.

Our stove is at the back of the boat with a side corridor, stove in line with corridor. Last Friday we went to the boat and I lit the stove. After it was going well I went into the kitchen and felt it was colder than I expected. Then I noticed I had left the Ecofan hanging up. Put it on the stove and within 5 minutes or so the kitchen was getting warmer. I have noticed this before. The fan seems to drive heat through the corridor but it does not appear to move air with much velocity. I no way scientific but enough to suggest to me that they do work to some degree but if you want high velocity air you need a computer fan.

There are so many what if's.....what if the fan hadnt been put on the stove and five minutes later the kitchen began to warm up anyway. When boaters have conducted tests have all the variables been eactly the same? inside temp, outside temp, any wind outside, any ice on the cut, all boat vents open or closed, any windows open or closed, was the exact same amount of stove fuel used etc etc.
My feelings are we buy these things and want them to work so we convince ourselves that they work. We have faith in the little stove top spinny thing.....it is the messiah.
The band Elwood the band....we're putting the band back together.....Jesus H Chr*st I see the light

In fact if you could get a few Finns to copy you, you could negate all Trump's efforts to accelerate global warming. Get to it, foxy.

For us, hubby swears it makes all the difference. Me...it's just something else to dust and is of little use other then to let me know if the fire needs some more fuel

In my opinion they work. Sorry to be late in this discussion. I had one that moved the air further down the boat from the Squirrel that was right at the front of the boat and the bedroom, right at the stern on a 59ft trad boat), was slightly warmer than before and the heat was also more evenly distributed in other rooms. Yes, you can't feel a draft from them but, during winters living aboard, I found a difference. Roger
