I’m not quite sure what it is we must never forget? I'm not going to walk into another one on this thread. However to me. It's about remembering those that gave their ultimate sacrifice and that includes both all sides of all wars and all the civilian people all over the world whos only fault was living in the wrong place. Actually it was quite funny, I think lollygagger’s “greenie” was because of the “lest we forget” and then “I think I’ve forgotten” connotation. But actually my humour was accidental. What I really meant was that it pisses me off that Remberance Day is full of silly old duffers wearing poppies who are only concerned about what happened in WW1 or WW2. Meanwhile millions of people are dying in wars RIGHT NOW, like in Syria, and in Yemen at the hands of our bum chums the Saudis. The hypocrisy makes me sick.

Well done, looking back it's quite funny. Which was why I was clear it is about all wars. As far as I'm aware, although it was a personal view. I always thought that all though we acknowledge the end of the war. It was all ways about remembering the dead. Whenever they fell, if we don't that's a shame. I think the two world wars get more of the limelight is because of the sheer scale of it. I was in the scouts growing up and attended many rememberence parades as does my son now. But I remember when I started there were a lot of WWII armed forces survivors but by the time I was a venture scout we were down to one. That saddens me a bit as hearing about it from someone that was there was much more educational and moving than reading about it at school and we were coming to a time when there will be no-one left who lived through either war And weren't a small child. I'm lucky enough to live in a part of the country that has a lot of history relating to the wars and enjoy exploring them. But your right we never rock out any Falklands veterans let alone Iraqi or Afghan ones. It's not hypocritical. It's down right disgusting.

Roughly as many Syrian people have died in the current civil war, as British people died in WW2. But we don’t really care as they are brown, talk funny and are far far away.

Can someone tell me what he did, exactly? A KNIGHTHOOD? What about that last remaining Dambuster? Perhaps I'm out of order here but I would have thought an MBE a bit more appropriate. I am uneasy regarding Sir Mo's achievements, though I don't doubt his personal honesty or integrity. He has 'potential classic patsy' stamped all over him by association. I feel sorry for him.

Just to be clear the British Legion its in the name! looks after forces/ex forces from all wars/not wars in fact anything! Now I will have a rant as well Dame Kelly Holmes worked for me as a Cpl PTI, as a PTI she was pretty naff as an Olympic athlete she was awesome so all her achievments were for herself and her further career! I had her promoted and posted to a TA unit in London, she was upset at the time but later thanked me for giving her the opportunity to train to win. I think Knighthoods/awards are to freely given Bob Geldoff is for me a great example of who shouldnt get them!!

There are a few walking around with knighthoods who maybe shouldn't have got them..but they did and its put the integrity of the awards in question...or has it?...through out history sleezy characters were rewarded so really modern day no different except we have social media and newspapers all to willing to dish the dirt. Whatever they are all only human..will all end up 6ft under or a pile of ashes...and they'll be remembered not for their 'gong' but for their actions during their life.

Telemachus, I get your points above. I can't help with wars in lands far away, but I became an RAF pilot as a result of the sort of heroes that fought in wars very close to home. i joined the military to fly jets and defend my mum's house - not to bomb hot sandy places to keep 10p off the price of a gallon of petrol. Mrs Loafer says to get off the keyboard in my state, and it's feeding time shortly.
I think knighthoods should be given to the inventors of electricity, GPS, that sort of thing. Not for running around a racetrack, or being a great example to schoolboys. It's about chivalry, and knighthood is just about the top of the list!

One of Loafer's more lurid posts. I approve of This Sort of Thing. I think I had to be fed, halfway through my post. Sorry for the confusion!
