There was a line here that got closed to passengers bit they continued to use of for freight. Eastliegh to Romsey via Chandlers ford. They fully reopened it after volunteers did up c'ford station. It now carries a service to Southampton. Quite useful. There has been numerous attempts to reopen the freight line to fawley as the traffic to and from there and surrounding areas is awful, buss that take ages and a passenger ferry service to the city centre. One day it will reopen as the only trains that go there are normally the steam train specials. The Bristol to Portishead line was refurbished recently and carries huge (Australian) coal trains from Royal Portbury Dock. It is on the list for opening new passenger services. When the police shot a suspect driver on the A469 recently and closed the road for a day there was nothing but narrow country lanes linking Bristol with the large dormitory town with the city. Which begs the question - why does police business, even when they are not involved in an incident, take priority over tens of thousands of drivers who rely on using the public highways to get to and from their job, or to the airport, or to their holiday destination, or to the hospital for a long-awaited appointment? Close the road or M-way for an hour, maybe, but for a full day or even longer (with drivers stuck in a traffic block with no support, no toilets, no nothing) - it makes me want to spit in their faces. Accidents happen, sometimes people die, but no-one assesses the real cost of all those delays, both financial and emotional. They do that here. They close the a31 through the new forest after every accident. which leaves single lane 40mph roads through little villages. This leaves the m27 and surrounding area gridlocked. They won't make it three lane or even put in a hard shoulder which would give room to get vehicles past. And if it's school holidays it can take fives hours to do a twenty minute journey. They might trial changing the barriers so they can get vehicles onto the other side as once your in the forest there s only two chances to get of the road. Some people et stuck for up to 8 hours on the m27 and m3. So the police can carry out a through investigation.

Up in my neck of the woods, the Borders line has partially re-opened, Bit over budget, but reckoned a success. Down to single track for much of it, but plans are there to double track the full route, and extend it to Carlisle, as well as putting back some of the branches off it.
The Edinburgh suburban lines were always busy before Beeching; standing room only at peak times; but not much chance of re-opening them now that they're cycle tracks ....

Only part of the line is open, much work needs to be done to create a viable passenger solution, costs are skyrocketing, project hasn't even passed GRIP 3 yet, no new money being made available - unlikely to get the go-ahead in next 10 years is my opinion (and this is a line that would be heavily used by passengers. Pic of the line just to the west of Portbury 2 years ago.

Except Fawley Station is in the middle of the refinery and no longer easily accessible and a new Hythe station would be needed in a more convenient location. And the ferry is struggling to stay open despite it being the quickest option if you work near the bottom end of Southampton.

Does this mean we are getting steam trains back as well?....I remember the days..Oundle to Barnwell on the ole steam train..sweets in the shop(flying saucers at 4 a penny) then waiting for the bus home..it was always on a hot summers day.....it was a treat out...I could recreate childhood.... Steam trains have never gone away. This was the Flying Scotsman last month, zapping through Spalding –

Not many would of heard about hythe. Ending the free bus from town quay to the station won't of helped. On a side note my kids have steered the hythe ferry. As a trial they could make the one that shunts to and from Romsey go to hythe too. Would probably have to sort out that stupid crossing in totton.

Here ya go pearley. He had a five minute go piloting the ferry. No idea how it happened but no one else was on board and the captain invited them up. Made their day.

Was trying to comment on your picture but for some reason my tablet won't let me.
Was born and bred in Hythe and married a girl from Dibden Purlieu.
Not quite the Hotspur ferry of my youth. When courting we would get the ferry to the city to watch a film at the Odeon or ABC but the last ferry left before the film finished. So many we've missed the end of.

My better half grew up in Yelverton avenue until she moved in with me.

Potentially it would be great to see the old branch lines opened again. But I can't see it happening in our life times. What I think would be more beneficial, is the re-opening of some of the old stations that are currently on the main rail network.

Enjoyed the Ian Hislop programme on the Beeching cuts last night.
I always felt that public transport should be a free, or heavily subsidised public service. The employment it provided rather than paying unemployment benefits, would have been an additional boost.
