I have a journey to plan.
Train is 4 changes, 5 1/2 hours and £42 each way, or would be if there were any return services on Christmas eve. Price not to bad, but...
My crappy old camper is not fuel efficient at 20mpg on a run. 135 miles each way = 30litres x £1.20 = £36 and (traffic allowing) 3hours each way and I can make a cuppa + has eberspacher heating if there's a big hold up, which there will be in both directions on the M62 on Christmas eve but even a 2 hour hold up beats the train.

Especially after train company's have been mis selling tickets, for routes that they already know have been cancelled or will suffer major disruption over the Christmas period.

I like trains but only if I'm not in a rush to get anywhere... they always seeem expensive BUT my brain never factors in the "true cost" of running 2 cars...
If I sat down and did the sums, we should get rid of our cars already as taxis to sainsburys and back and EVEN the red-diesel selling petrol station would be cost less than having cars "and going nowhere" does...

Yes, there's something very wrong when it's cheaper for one person to use a car than to share a train. In fact flying works out cheaper per mile in many cases.

I like the trains, but only when I get a bargain.
SWT uses to do some great deals. A tenner anywhere on the network and kids free. So from Southampton we would either have a day on the beach at Weymouth or a day in London. Great day trips for school holidays
Although they got kicked out I'm hoping the new lot will do similar deals.
My best trip was about 32 quid from Southampton to Thurso. Southampton to Waterloo Megatrain £1 London Euston to Edinburgh. Sleeper £16 Waverly to thurso 5.50.
Including taking the bike too. Good trip except if your not in a room on the sleeper I don't think they should call it a sleeper

In the old days you could get Merrymaker tickets which were great for a day trip somewhere. So where do you get these deals now and how long beforehand do you have to book ahead?

Pretty much as soon as the advanced tickets are out on sale. I think around 12 weeks. The sleeper has changed owners and don't think they do the bargain tickets anymore. We could of got a cheap bed on their but they went too quick. Mega train is ok, obviously they don't have their own trains and using as a day return I found impossible as the timings are wrong but for a longer stay or a single there are plenty of cheap tickets. You do need to book early as they only jave a few at the cheap rate and then a few more at a slightly higher price etc etc. Getting in their early is key and looking for the offers I prefer to use trainline to hunt for prices but as they have a charge, I them go direct with the operator to pay. There is that trick of splitting the journey too can have great results. It's just time spent playing on the ticket site.

We're going on a train on Monday. Really slow. We are embarking at Fort William at 10:30 and not getting to the destination until 16:00. The destination is Fort William. Doesn't get any slower than that!
OK well it's the "Harry Potter" steam train that goes Ft William to Ft William via Mallaig and the Harry Potter curving viaduct at Glenfinnan. I'll be looking out for Ford Anglias

Fuck doing all that, I'll continue driving - door to door, own tea facilities, no wankers singing along to their mobiles, a seat (!) even if that does involve driving, cheaper, quicker, I can smoke ciggies, no stinking train toilets, no lugging my gear on and off 4 trains, no waiting on cold platforms, no taxi/hike at each end and I could sleep in it if I wanted to. Trains just aren't working for me.

What's your journey? I could have a look. I'm quite good at finding good fares. We flew Finland -> Stansted return for 12 Euros once (four of us = 48 Euros for a 3-hour flight each way). Splitting train journeys often helps - for instance, Manchester Airport to Sowerby Bridge 'straight' is much more expensive than buying a ticket Airport->Piccadilly and then another ticket Victoria-> Sowerby Bridge. Also, a concessions card, such as the Two Together, gives you 33% off. As reply above, all that hassle for an incomplete journey that I have no control over and will only go one way if it's running at all?

Local service is extortionate too, well over £1 per mile at all times, can't buy in advance, no return ticket discounts avaiable and the trains are like something from the 1960's. If there are two people it must be cheaper to use a taxi.

As reply above, all that hassle for an incomplete journey that I have no control over and will only go one way if it's running at all? You haven't stated from where to where. You also have no control over the 26,000 other drivers coming past you, some of whom could be drunk/drug-influenced/just cunts. Travelling by train is a most civilised thing to do. Good for the planet too. You fly a lot. I never do, 4 short flights in a lifetime. I worked at home. No commuting polluting from me. For decades less than 2,000 miles a year. I'm the civilised one by your own measure, not you. I'm owed a bit of polluting, you're tons of it ahead of me.
