I could have come out with a better title. This came, obviously, from the golf course photo. The photo below appeared in the Witchy & Foxy's Summer Adventure series here on TB (June-Aug 2017). I still like it, as I know the trouble I took to take it, and some may not have seen Mr Vole of Wardle Lock, Middlewich:

That is a wonderful photograph Ross, You were very fortunate to be able to meet "Ratty" in person
They're lovely creatures, I remember sitting quietly on the boat at my mooring listening to the crunching noise as they munched on plant stems at the water's edge. Just occasionally catching a glimpse of them as they swam along the edge back to their burrows.
I suppose that must have been in the 70's just as the mink started to become a real threat. Gradually they became a rarer and rarer sight and finally one summer the last of them was killed ...... I was sitting in the cratch at the time and heard the noise and the horrible screaming as the mink caught it. Shouting and throwing things in that direction didn't save it.
A very sad day. I didn't see another live watervole for many years until just a few years ago when I was touring in Shapfell. (and that was just a very brief glimpse)
incidentally, if that had been in the photo competition I think it would have been a show stopper !!! (Sorry Chagal, although I voted for your brilliant photo in the competition, for that photo I would have abandoned your cause)

The photo competition was not 'animals' but 'boats & waterways'. Pirkko saw it first, working the lock and screamed "A rat!!" and went to smack it with the windlass - I shouted back "Leave it alone!". I didn't know they were rare. I took around 30 photos. Hand held, but I nearly always have the 2-second timer on to reduce hand-shake, just hold the camera as still as you can and let it fire itself.

The photo competition was not 'animals' but 'boats & waterways'. In my mind a watervole is the waterways (but I know what you mean) P.S. I'm glad you protected it from Pirkko
