After watching this video, the choice is an easy one for me. My granddad spent his working life fishing at sea on a small sailing vessel with only a young lad to assist. No engine to go wrong in his days, but he needed lots of sails, as even when reduced to the max the wind often managed to rip them apart. Peter.

Peter. 2 professions I have the utmost respect for are trawlermen and the RNLI bods who sometimes have to go and rescue them (and others of course)

Does make you appreciate the relative calm of inland waterways. As for you grandad sailing without an engine, that's a real skill. No girly buttons for him.

In my granddays days at sea, quite a few years before WW-2, girly buttons only existed on womans clothing, he didn't even have electric light, just a few oillamps and a wood burner as mod cons, and not to forget the multi purpose bucket . Girly buttons on the fishing boats of this video would only be useful when slowly manoeuvering in a harbour, as they wouldn't do anything at all in seas like that. Peter.

I admire people like your grandad, this was really sailing. Without all the modern equipment it needed real skill. As for the boats in the video, you do have to wonder what they where doing out in such conditions.

Actually its reasonably ok in those conditions. (speaking from experience) The incoming waves are standing up due to the fresh water current sweeping outwards, in seas like that, waves are relatively slow moving breaking over themselves, however the water is still quite deep due to the river, looks bloody dangerous but are in fact quite controllable when coming in. the boats are well battened down and drain freely (apart from the photographer who got a wake up call..) Everything/ one is inboard so bit rough but controllable..
I had 10 years of big surf into a shallow river - less than 2 m deep. Those you have to watch out for, timing has to be perfect or you really are over.
