Maybe a cheap way to get solar water heating www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253333860411 ILooks like interesting technology, because it doesn't look like glass vacuum tubes. A friend of mine had a vacuum tube unit on the roof of his marrowboat and swore by it. Personally I wouldn't want all that delicate glassware on my roof. This is different tech, I don't know how it compares to glass vacuum tubes though. Just to point out im nothing to do with the vendor.

I think the one on the right is 're and set up as I had at home. We have the white barrel and the same controllers.
Basically it pumps water up to small black tubes under the solar thing.
Whilst it's not really worth it in the winter. It keeps the water tank up to temp in the summer. We hardly use any electric. Certainly under a pound a day in the summer.

Are they so as effective as the vacuum tubes? Much less vulnerable on a cabin top.

I wouldent know. But they work very well. But our hot water system does hold the water at the minimum tempiture allowed.

I was was wondering if swimming pool heaters might be an option for summer hot water. Probably not much output but they would look good and tidy on the cabin top Look at this on eBay www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222432861486

Looks a lot more sturdy than vacuum tubes which are glass. I'm just wondering how it compares with effectiveness.

I think solar water heating would work well with an instant water heater like Morco or paloma. These units are designed to raise the temperature of the existing water supply by X degrees. So if you put warmer water in there will be less gas consumption.
Trouble is there would be a tank of tepid water somewhere which may be dodgy. Not sure that's sensible actually !!
Maybe for dishes but not baths.

Maybe for dishes but not baths. thats exactly why they are useful. As you point out having tepid water left in a tank is not a good idea ( legionaries disease etc) I don't know how they get round this. As I say a friend of mine had a vacuum tube unit on his narrowboat and was very pleased with it.

Hi Kris, maybe the way some Vanners make their hot (warm) water could be an inspiration for you to make a DIY cheap system.
This is looking easy enough to build without too much expenses for parts that should be available almost everywhere.
Peter.

I don't think the items in my original post are good value anymore. ( just for clarity.)

When building and fitting out my boat, I put in an extra dedicated shower head connected to a cabin-top spigot, with a tapped pressurised supply to another external spigot alongside it. The idea was to use a black flexible tank I could fill from inside, and rely on gravity to shower with in the evening.
Only ever used it on the first major trip with my sister back in the early nineties, prior to getting properly started on a fit out and having no water system or cabin electrics. We used a spare air mattress manually filled with water, and it gave us both good hot showers in the evening. It was a hot summer mind . . .
