My laptop is on it's last legs and I've been meaning to get a new one for a while. Ordering online is a pain as half of my post seems to go missing, and there don't seem to be any decent 'real' pc shops these days, so I've been putting it off. Yesterday I was passing by my local PCWorld and noticed they had big signs up for the sales saying that they would beat any other large UK retailer on price. I decided that it was worth dealing with the clueless PCWorld staff and putting up with them trying to sell me unnecessary extra shite if I got to take the laptop straight away at the proper price.
I selected the laptop I wanted and then found it both on the Dell site and on Amazon for £200 less and asked a staff member if they could price match. Of course they couldn't. Apparently they don't class Amazon or Dell as large retailers...
While I was there I thought I'd pick up a USB extension cable I needed. Nope. Apparently the UK's largest PC shop doesn't stock USB extension cables...
How the fuck are they still in business while being so shit at what they do?

(I am a total ignoramus about computers but I'm sensible enough to find someone who does know and ask for help)

You kind of knew before you went in really, so they just confirmed your suspicisions. As for how they survive last time I went into one, they seemed to have more tv's than computers.

I was not previously aware that the chairman of the group who own Currys is a Conservative Lord. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixons_CarphoneBut it doesn't surprise me to be fair. Nothing new under the sun after all. Typo edit

Yes they are utterly hopeless. I recall doing “click and collect” for a printer a few years ago, it turned into a frustrating saga. Recently I needed to get a new PC tower for the gliding club, I just knew I shouldn’t go to PC World but did anyway. All their stuff was overpriced shite. I left empty handed. Fortunately I remembered there was an independent PC shop in Aberdeen so I went there, they were extremely sensible and helpful and sold me just what I needed at a very good price.
I think the problem is that one doesn’t buy PCs that often, and the interim is sufficient time to forget how truly awful PC World are!

Yes they are truly Pissy World.
I now do all my research online and then go in knowing what I want. For cables and extra bits I use Maplins or ebay.

My mum said Currys was SHIT and that was in the 1970s!! Obviously they are still shit. How about everyone here sending them an e-mail telling them they are SHIT?!! So.... where do we get decent computers at decent prices? I was impressed 15 years ago when my son built his own computer using hand-selected components. I gave him lifts here & there to pick up the bits. Finland seems more 'with it' in the technical world, the Brits just get offered tripe on an expensive plate. You have to find someone who knows about computers, and buy something decent, and knowing that anyway it's only good for 4 years. I have kept my old keyboard from 2001 as it's clumsy-looking but human fingers ain't changed and it's perfect. Like these 'smart phones' - you need a special 'stylus' pen to work 'em and two hands just to answer a call ffs!! Like I said, a small independent computer shop is probably best. My last couple of Laptops have come direct from Dell - you can configure and buy your chosen device on line, it gets built and arrives a week or so later. Probably only any good if you know what to order. No, most smartphones don’t need a special ‘stylus’ pen. Maybe 2 hands to answer depending on your level of dexterity, and of course no hands if it’s Bluetooth-connected to your car.

My Toshiba came from PC world but was bought by my ex who worked for them it was cheap and has touch wood been a good buy. PC world has huge buying power so you would expect to find some bargains, but without Lynn I would have payed the going rate
