Keep seeing people say that winter is the best time of the year for proper boaters, can someone please explain how this can be true when everything is wet, cold, frozen, muddy, dark, cold bedrooms, damp.. muddy.... cold..... shit
Maybe its just me, but its shit, i like sitting on the cruiser stern, in the sun, in the middle of country, cold ale, solar working.
I get the canals are quieter, but that doesnt bother me, in fact the midlands canals are never really busy, maybe hawkesbury is annoying in the middle of summer, but thats about it, can moor where i like up the ashby, on the cov, northern oxford..
Roll on Spring and the return of the hire boats!

I'm the same. Given that I have to work half the year I'd sooner work in the Winter and play in the Summer.

When everything is performing well, and your boat is a cosy oasis of peace, and the sky is blue and the sun is shining down despite the towpaths being frozen, then winter can be glorious.
When it's wet and muddy and you're running out of coal and gas, and you don't know where the coal boat currently is, it can be a bit of a trial.
I actually thing the real trick is to take the best bits out of each season, and enjoy them as much as possible, rather than focussing on the bits you don't like.
After all, part of the enjoyment of sitting in the sun is the process you have to go through to achieve that.

Winter is winter whether you are on a boat or in a central heated house or where ever....dark damp, sparkling frost, clear night skies, howling gales....etc etc..tis a season of extremes..except for glorious hot sunshine..We get sunshine but not the heat. I like bits of all the seasons so long as I can find stuff outside to keep my mind in touch with nature...don't like being stuck inside....I do like seeing tree skeletons cos there are some lovely ones when they are not covered in leaves...Also don't have to cut the grass so no fighting with the lawn mower....so winters not so bad....

I love the four seasons, something gets me about the changing world. Now off to pub whilst some nosy parkers look around me house....

Ok the tree that just waited there for me to climb..... "]
You can't beat a bit of tree climbing. We were camping in the new forest last year. My kids were climbing trees, because that's what you do and some bloody caravaner went and grasses em up to the wardens. They replied with and, the problem Is? I remember climbing so many trees.

Nice bit of firewood. Trees usually have some dead branches on them. If I need firewood I sometimes throw a small grappling hook on a thin line up and try to break the branch off.
Climbing the tree would be an alternative option but as my main aim would be acquiring the wood it would only be necessary if the hook gets stuck.
I found a supply of really wicked small stainless grappling hooks for this purpose. £2.50 or so from china. Probably welded up by 10 year olds. At least it keeps them out of trouble !!

I never thought to acquire firewood...just sitting in the branches is enough...anyway I think all the volunteers working there would probably prevent firwork collection as all the wood and logs there seems to be left to rot ...
