I've been replacing some walls and noticed rusty patches on the inner hull I'm going to wire brush it, treat with Fertan and paint with zinc-oxide primer and Danboline coating, but I'm not sure if I can keep the non-rusty paint, or need to strip the whole thing to bare metal, it's a few square metres which seems like a lot of labour. Is it fine to keep the healthy paint?

I'd just leave it. What insulation are you going to put on there? I'm no expert on actually doing things like this but I have noticed that some boat builders smear grease onto the internal hull sides then apply Rockwool. Both my boats are done like that. Not sure how it works if there is rust there though.

Might be best to just clean the rust off and apply the sprayfoam direct to the remaining metal. I'm sceptical about the long term effectiveness of sprayfoam but it does seem to be the most popular option. Diy application sounds like fun !

Just a technical point of order.
Boats don't have walls.

I've used Fertan quite a few times and it works perfectly fine for me

Just a technical point of order. Boats don't have walls. Fair point, I've been aboard shortly

Partitions, bulkheads hull sides, cabin sides, lining. There are quite a few other members here who will be able to advise on this as well.
I don't really see the point of painting the surface if you are going to apply an adhesive foam system. Surely it would stick better to clean metal than a coat of paint ?

I have found this very successful (and sensibly priced) and you don't have to wash off before overpainting (I used red oxide on top but it seems to last very well without anything else) www.toolstation.com/shop/Painting+%26+Decorating/d150/Metal+Paints+%26+Primers/sd3152/Rust+Converter/p43408
