Atherstone is ok for pubs, moor at the top lock, walk to the bridge then turn left into town, i count eight from memory along the main strip (old A5), plus a couple more on the back streets.
And three indian restaurants!

Never done the Nene so I'm afraid Gazza is wetting my apetite but I'm unable to judge. The Greyhound is indeed a star. A real gem. I like the Anchor, and also the Swan at Fradley. But I'm not impressed with the Junction, Huddlesford. Okay, just doesn't do it for me. Rog It's nearly an even split between the Nene and Great Ouse out if the 8 I initially mentioned 🍻🍻

There is (or was) a Thunderboater who made a detailed list of pubs. After a quiet spell he posted again - a couple of months ago? There could be a proper pub list in alphabet-mode so you can easily look it up and TBers' comments if it's approaching and you are wondering whether to pop in (but no-one has done that yet). Unless you are writing all of this down now on paper, this thread will slowly drop down Page 1 and onto Page 2 and slide all the way into the world of the forgotten threads. One of the most important things about what makes a pub pleasant is the staff. Generally I find pub staff know fuck all about their beers these days and when you ask where it comes from they just make it up. I usually find bar staff rather sniffy. Let me have a quick think - if she's still alive, the woman who owns it, The Red Lion in Langthwaite, near Reeth (along the tiny moors road from The Tan Hill Inn) has been a favourite of mine. The Fox and Goose in Hebden Bridge seemed OK but was spoilt by an Australian behind the bar (probably a lesbian knowing Hebden Bridge). (I find Australians ignorant and boring and shouldn't be working in British pubs - they just spoil the atmosphere). Al Murray, time gentlemen please. 7 minutes odd in.

I've only ever been in two waterside pub (view of the water) in my life. The angel at Henley on Thames.
It was OK. Not really a pub person tbh. Too lazy.

How can any of the pubs you suggest, be described as canal side foxy?
Hell of a walk from the moorings.

The Black Horse, Great Linford was where, last summer, we were charged £5 for a pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord.
Actually we refused, and had a cheap pint of Bombardier instead cos it was only £3.80.

Ive had a nice pint in the rising sun and cape of good hope.
I quite enjoyed the cheap meal at the Durham of in shrewley and the food at the queens head in congleton.
Proper value at the drawbridge in, Shirley reasonable too.

What about The Grapes in Limehouse, Gandalf's boozer? What's that like? Not been in there for a couple of years (well probably more like 8 or 9 ) very crowded and a bit yuppified but seem to remember the beer was ok

Don't very often frequent pubs but have sorta taken note and my next womble around countryside may find me within reach of these recommended places...

Just realised I wasn't accurate earlier.
I went to the grapes about a year ago but it wasn't when boating - just happens to be near my mooring.
Also been to the Narrow by Limehouse Basin.
Grapes was nice and old fashioned, owned by a twat and the narrow is a twat owned pub so I can never like either of them really.

that reminds me of another waterside pub ...... excellent but bloody pricey on the food side (but there is a superb cafe across the road for that). Very difficult to find a more "boaty" pub ....... even if they are mostly the snooty blazer wearing types www.google.co.uk/maps/uv?hl=en&pb=!1s0x47d9759f1756a823:0xd5aa70f2207339c8!2m22!2m2!1i80!2i80!3m1!2i20!16m16!1b1!2m2!1m1!1e1!2m2!1m1!1e3!2m2!1m1!1e5!2m2!1m1!1e4!2m2!1m1!1e6!3m1!7e115!4s/maps/place/butt%2Band%2Boyster/@51.996271,1.2122232,3a,75y,65.71h,90t/data%3D*213m4*211e1*213m2*211sEa6Y5MbWsJP4qfF1mnrSNw*212e0*214m2*213m1*211s0x47d9759f1756a823:0xd5aa70f2207339c8!5sbutt+and+oyster+-+Google+Search&imagekey=!1e2!2sEa6Y5MbWsJP4qfF1mnrSNw&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjd3qjgm93YAhWsI8AKHUQiDscQpx8IgAEwDA Hmmmmm that link doesn't seem to work ....... it's the Butt and Oyster at Pin Mill 004 by mudlarker2, on Flickr
