Sat in the Boathouse (Marstons pub) at Braunston, enjoying a pint......hrmph okay two pints of Hobgoblin. Got me considering what are my three favourite canal side hostelries. I like the Boathouse, despite it's obvious limitations. Cheapish food of a basic standard, fair choice of drinks, some excellent staff, and always open and welcoming. Any thoughts (whilst I go to the bar ) Rog

Well we always enjoy the Swan at Fradley, sitting outside on a summer’s afternoon watching the mayhem at the junction in the middle of the lock flight (plenty of scope for crashery and arguments), swing bridge etc.
Really like the Blue Lias at Stockton - again, garden on a sunny afternoon after coming down the locks. And for some reason it is always sunny when we are there!
Plough, Huddlesford Jn does great TT Landlord but no canal view.
We used to like the little cottage bar at Worcester Bar (Gas st) but it’s gone a bit upmarket now.
On the “I can’t believe it’s not better”, I would put the Fleur de Lys, Lowsonford somewhere near the top.

All worthy of mention.
Some friends like the Fleur so we meet there several times a year. A lovely building, but a bit expensive for fairly ordinary food.
The 61 at Foxton. A proper place.

Food there was ace a few years ago, then the manager left, but like you say, ok for a cheap plate of food and ales not bad.
Anchor at hartshill on the coventry has decent ales and food, landlord and his son have been in place for about four years now and doing well.
Lime Kilns at Hinckley has interesting ales, food is ok, can moor the boat on the beer garden.
Nice food at the rising sun, shackerstone on the ashby.
One that always puzzles me, the brewers fayre at hinckley, the marina by the looks of it have rights to the bank so you cant moor up outside, we moored on the services for the marina, bloke came out and told us we couldnt moor there, we laughed and went the pub.
Greyhound, good ales and food, nice garden around the back, good to watch the hire boats in the summer try and get round the junction.

I prefer the Two Boats to the Blue Lias.
The reason being we walked up to the Blue Lias one icy but sunny winter day, only to find they shut at 2pm.
Had to walk back to the Two Boats, which is sensibly open all day.
Ever since, they have my vote (and cash).

Never been to Lime Kilns, but have heard good reports.
The worst meal I have EVER had was at the marina pub, and it was two meals for a fiver at that! Appalling and we were robbed.
The next day we ate at the Dog and Hedgehog (I think) at Stoke Gouling. It cost a fortune but was superb, and an unusual menu too.

Three isn't enough.
Mentions must go to:-
Britannia, Northampton. Chef and Brewer but always been OK when we have gone there. Short mooring.
Queens head, Nassington. Not cheap but a brilliant mooring in a lovely village.
Five miles from anywhere, Upware. Cheapish eats, good music, provisions and access to the Lodes for dog walking. Good moorings if the Cambridge Motor Boat club haven't hogged them all.
The Cutter, Ely. Outrageously expensive but we'll located on Ely riverside right by Fairlight's birth place.
Lazy Otter, Stretham. Good well priced food. 36' limit for patrons craft.
Ferryboat, Hollywell. Stunning location, good food and drink, sadly we don't get that way every year.

Never done the Nene so I'm afraid Gazza is wetting my apetite but I'm unable to judge.
The Greyhound is indeed a star. A real gem.
I like the Anchor, and also the Swan at Fradley.
But I'm not impressed with the Junction, Huddlesford. Okay, just doesn't do it for me.

Rising Sun at Scholar Green (Macclesfield) is jolly good, and the food is okay too.
Oh and the Ring o'Bells at Marple.
Too many....too many....

I will personally try all of the mentioned pubs in this thread, and supply a definite guide. Obviously, this is a gargantuan task, and seen that I'm willing to undertake it free of charge to supply the forum an ultimate answer, all I ask is you donate too: www.stumpyspissup.com to cover; beer costs, food, lap dancing clubs, transport etc etc

We too like(d) the Greyhound, but it's yonks since we were in there.
Remembered with some fondness because they were very caring of our previous dog after he fell in crossing the gate at Sutton Stop Lock. In the dark he didn't notice the gap between the gate and the lock side.
We used to like the Anchor at Slaterforth on the L&L but it gets variable reviews.
The Dragon at Willington was a regular haunt too but that went 'up market' a few years ago and became a bit of a 'foody' pub.
Like the OP we also like the Boat House at Braunston - cheap and cheerful.
ed - oh and the Globe on The Ashby at Snarestone was a welcoming pub serving a decent pint.

If you go the greyhound and its full, which it usually is... Go out the back and see if the whippet bar is open, a little pub with a marquee and beer garden.

It's so long since we've done any other pubs on the canals. Had pleasant visits to the Cape of Good Hope, Warwick. Barge Inn Honey Street. Used to be regular visitors to the Galleon Wolverton, Navigation, Cosgrove and the Black Horse Great Linford either by car or boat. Furthest south we got in 2011 was the Solbury Three Which was OK. Every pub between Stoke Bruene and Buckby top lock. So many pubs so little time and money
