Me and my boy moored briefly on the Thames last year somewhere near Staines to clear a slow-running prop and as we did so, there sat on the bank was a weed hatch cover. We left it there and I hope the owners had their "oh shit" moment and came back for it. I am a bit paranoid about the weed hatch myself and it is a rule that whenever it comes off, at least two crew members have to check it has been replaced correctly. Whenever I have had to take it off while single-handing, I always put it on the counter, never the bank.

If possible (and I know its not always possible) its best to clear the propeller without removing the weedhatch. By using a decent boathook either from the bank or leaning over side of the counter (narrow boats). I've been all over the canal system (admittedly with a big propeller) and only had the weedhatch off about 3 or 4 times. Yes it is possible to clear a lot of shit with a properly arranged boathook. Without taking the weedhatch lid off. But sometimes you do have to get in there. Its best to make this a rare event and concentrate on the refitting and condition of seal. Keep a camping mat in the engine bay in case a new seal needs to be made up unexpectedly

There's a handy 'shelf' to the left and right of the 'V' at the back of our boat so I put the weed hatch on that. I think I'd find it hard to forget to put it back. Tape renewed not long ago, and weed hatch area all nice and clean in every corner, as we had the chance to deal with it very properly July 2016 in dry dock. I was a little surprised at so many chandlers not knowing what 'weed hatch tape' is, though. Took a while to find what I was looking for. Just this, so simple, but so hard to find!

That's self adhesive neoprene tape. I prefer a camping mat cut to shape with a Stanley knife myself.

I guess you want a 'wake the dead' type beeper that runs off the engine ignition and connects to the float switch of the bilge pump...

A friend allowed his son to take his narrow boat on a short holiday. The son had been narrow boating with Dad all his life so not really a novice.
The son had to dig into the weed hatch to clear the prop. He 'knew' what he was doing and replaced it before continuing his journey and sinking the boat!
He'd put the hatch back on the opposite way round (back to front) without realising, and therefore failing to make a seal. It gradually shipped water until it was sat on the bottom. Being a midlands canal this only left water lapping over the floors, but it still caused a hell of a mess.
Not a phone call you'd want to make. "Dad.......you know the boat......."

Is it really too much trouble to lift the deckboards every so often to see if there's water in the engine room? Especially after replacing a weed hatch? Well, yes it is.

If mermaids have to get their hair wet...that's me out of the game again...I hate getting my hair wet when I'm swimming.

I always run without the deckboards in place for 30 minutes or so after removing the weedhatch, running briefly at full engine rpm, reversing etc.
