I have a Skoda. It’s a great car and I suspect it’s faster than any other member’s car. And it has a tow bar. We could have a Thunderboat race! My MX5 would beat you on the corners. So let’s choose a straight course! I'm sure you are right, so it would depend on the ratio of straights to corners, length of the track etc (because with the Haldex, DSG gearbox and 280bhp it flies off the line).

I give away 60hp (revo stage1 map) but have a similar Haldex as yours. Like yours it has the correct petrol engine in it. We have had ours from new and it's been utterly brilliant, the only thing to fail was the stupid shark fin radio GPS antenna. Fixed under warranty and trouble free since. Yours would be epic with a wee flash, I have to say it's an excellent choice of car. Probably the only one in the current range that l would consider. Is yours Haldex 4 or 5? I ask because my Haldex 5 pump failed at 20k and it transpires this is a known fault and there is a modified pump to sort it. Yes the worst part of it is the white paint job. Dull dull dull. Edit: oh I see it’s Haldex 4

Gen 4, no failures yet, it is a common fault across the haldex equipped cars of any manufacture. Pumps can be had for about £170 and are easy to fit. We had the choice of our car on black magic or an identical one in this oap metallic green (I couldn't find a 4x4 estate image so this will have to do) Your white looks a bit more appealing 👍

Mine is off to the scrappy in a few months as there's not much of it left. Can't decide whether to get another or something a bit more sensible.

I'm not telling you what my present mode of transport is, 'cos I don't want to put you off racing me, but it has got a towbar and a nasty rasping exhaust. Not a merc G-55 is it? G-wagen is my dream vehicle. I'll buy one when the next wealthy relative dies and leaves me shed loads of cash.

Hawk it out on pistonheads, rusty Mx 5's are popular with the track day mob - a mate of mine has been doing a couple of seasons sprint championship with one and has got on really well with it.

You would be surprised by how much an old MX5 goes for. Now if only I hadn't scrapped the 2CV... PS. 2CVs corner better than an MX5.

I had the misfortune to see 2cv racing at Mallory park, the hairpin was mobbed as it was the only part of the circuit where there was much in the way of action. They looked for all the world like they should fall over, they didn't though.

I only turned mine over once, was on a roundabout, six people onboard so we soon uprighted it and 'sped' off before the law could catch us! I have never rolled a vehicle, but I came very close to it in a box back Honda Acty van. Hit the Chiswick roundabout during rush hour at a slightly over-excited turn of speed, and flipped up onto the nearside 2 wheels while going into a broadside skid at the same time. My focus was on steering out of the skid and maintaining verticality, forgetting about the surrounding traffic. I steered out of the 2 wheel skid, but was not quite gentle enough in getting back on all fours. We thumped back down so hard, and still at such a rate, that the van bounced over onto the 2 offside wheels, giving me a closer view of the tarmac than usual. The second time I managed a gentler transition back onto 4 wheels, on which the van thankfully stayed, just in time to take the exit for Kew Bridge. It was all quite exciting; it also had the unforeseen but welcome consequence of curing my passenger at the time of his appalling back-seat driving for ever after – it was all calm soothing exhortations as to the unimportance of speed from that point on. I realised after the event that I had managed to stay in my lane throughout [though I can’t honestly say that I was worrying about that at the time].

I was driving round the roundabout at the top of the A34 near Oxford once on the inside lane when the car must have hit a patch of spilt diesel as I found myself doing a complete 360 and slotting neatly between 2 cars on the outside lane where I carried on as if nothing had happened. I don't remember even having to straighten up. I looked in my mirror but the following cars which I thought would be spinning all over just drove round perfectly normally. Maybe they saw what happened to me and slowed down.

All this excitement on 4 wheels reminded me of my brief excursion into stunt driving. Coming home from Newark in the A17 I was pressing on, long straight road with no side turning which I knew well. To be honest I was probably touching 70. A line of mixed traffic approached, cars, vans , trucks and attics. As we began passing a mini pulled straight out from behind a lorry. I had a split second to decide what to do. I opted to go off road down towards the bottom of the dyke hoping to scrub off speed I turned up towards the road again only to find I took off at the top landings on the wrong side of the carriageway with traffic bearing down on me. I thought "oh tilt and promptly went off road again This time I wasn't so lucky because there was a drystone wall at the bottom of the dyke which I proceeded to demolish with a nose to tail somersault, I can remember seeing sky, grass, sky, grass till eventually stopping the right way up.. Got a ride home in a police car, the mini failed to stop and the officer said it would have been better if I'd hit it, I can see what he meant but given we were closing at about 140 mph it would not have ended well. The Police failed to catch up with the mini driver despite having the reg no , each time they found him he had moved on. Phil
