"A cynic is not merely one who reads bitter lessons from the past; he is one who is prematurely disappointed in the future. Cynicism is an unpleasant way of saying the truth. Those who are too weak to make a stand against reality have no choice but to obliterate themselves by identifying with it." Fuckin hell!! Three shredded wheat this morning then?

Bugger, I wish I'd known that when I sold my old boat, I'd have cashed the licence in pronto. Luckily it sold in a week but it might not have. Your broker would still likely have passed the cost onto you when it sold - though granted a 'trade plate' is cheaper than a normal boating licence. I cant recall the cost now but a figure something like £30 pcm sticks in my mind. My bathtub is on trade plates as it is being worked on £180? and something a year it has to be renewed this Feb

Found on google, I thought you and Tony particularly would like it. The quote I was looking for but didn't find was something about it not be possible to be cynical enough to match reality.

I think this may be the one you meant? "If there was anything that depressed him more than his own cynicism, it was that quite often it still wasn't as cynical as real life." Terry Pratchett My personal favourite cynic quote is this one... "By the time you swear you're his, Shivering and sighing. And he vows his passion is, Infinite, undying. Lady make note of this... One of you is lying." Dorothy Parker Thanks, that's the one. I'm a fan, I should have known!

I read Terry Pratchett's Reaper Man, as Lollypops suggested that line of enquiry. Although I thought it was well written, I didn't quite know what to make of it. I'm not one for living in fantasy worlds (even though I liked the Lord of the Rings movies). I've always liked Alf Wainwright's wry style, and I would always recommend his seven Guides to the Lakeland Fells for entertaining reading. His Pennine Journey has also given me pleasure. I'm a modern person who likes to dip into the olden days, as I appreciate some of those values, having experienced life being raw and real on occasions. The Dorothy Parker above reminds me of "Marriage is the first step towards divorce!" quip. Sometimes a bag of crisps in front of the TV is better than sex.

Terry's books are probably better read in order.

Agreed with the first quoted comment - too depressing for me to like - there has to be hope! Second quoted comment - can't agree - change crisps to a curry or proper spotted dick and we might be able to come to a mutual agreement.

Would our resident medics care to diagnose the problem? Could you lay it out on the table for examination?

We never had "spotted dick" in our house as it was NQOCD but I did visit a schoolfriend who had Marks and Spencer Formica flower pattern trays (very NQOCD at the time but I now have some of these in my boats bought from charity shops) and when he said we were having spotted dick for pudding I became very concerned. And I ran

Now and again Mum used to cook spare ribs, always enjoyed them. One day mums best mate came round for tea (Dinner for those NQOC) with her sons. When mum dished up ribs she walked out! It was seen, by her, as nqocd. Both my Mum and her worked as secretaries, my dad was an engineer, their dad worked in local government. Maybe it was the latter that made her think she was posh!

Work? You mean they worked? Was this to pass the time or to pay for things ?
