It appears that - thankfully - DEFRA has turned down, for now at least, the CaRT bid to take over Environment Agency waterways.

In all honesty I don't fully understand the implications of a possible C&RT take over, but accept that greater minds than mine believe it a bad thing.
With that in mind this appears good news.

Rog The current EA management are doing their level best to bugger things up as it is. Imagine handing over navigation to an organisation unfamiliar with the requirements of running a waterway that serves the dual function of drainage and navigation. The plan was to keep flood defence in house at the EA and ceed navigation control to C&RT - A recipe for a complete disaster, be it day to day management of the waterway, enforcement, fees, job security. You name it it would have impacted upon it. Better the devil you know and all that. Some of the big wigs at the IWA and GOBA will be chewing their fist while rocking back and forth in the corner of a darkened room - Good, those self serving plonkers stood to drop all of us in the shit just to put their mark on a cluster fuck in the making.

We would have put Fairlight on a lorry and took her back to her first home on the Broads. The BA have their faults, nowhere near as bad as the combined faults an EA/C&RT alliance would have had!

Caravan arrived today very interesting backing a 7ft4 wide caravan through an 8ft gateway from a narrow lane....... Just got to sell the Norman 20 which at present is safely avoiding the river on its trailer at the local marina. Still got the NB and GU mooring that will stay at least until I stop working and retire.......

'Damian' of CRT says, in Boaters' Update: "We are disappointed to report that Defra has indicated that it is not minded to proceed with the transfer of the river navigations currently managed by the Environment Agency to the Canal & River Trust. Having worked positively and collaboratively with the EA over the past 18 months or so to put forward a proposal, we remain convinced that the transfer would be in the wider public interest. It would deliver the real essence of value for taxpayers, and benefits for the users of these waterways whilst securing the long term future of the navigations themselves. We will of course continue to cooperate actively with the EA in the running of our respective navigations to ensure the best possible experience for all river and canal users." He does not say why he is disappointed - why can't he just say he thinks the EA are a bunch of incompetents? Why would CRT running EA waterways be "the real essence of value for taxpayers"? He does not explain. Why would CRT running the show "benefit the users of these waterways"? He does not explain. Why would CRT be "securing the long term future of the navigations"? Has the EA said they won't be doing that? When you see the system that CRT is running with leaking locks and broken paddle gear everywhere, and "a shortage of staff" (their words to me), a distinct lack of dredging, yet over enthusiasm for sending boaters nasty letters before having checked the facts, should they not be getting their own house in order before trying to run someone else's first? I suspect there is money changing hands involved here. Get the land, sell it for building 'luxury' apartments (poor quality thrown up by Eastern European cheap labour and tax-dodging construction companies), put the profits in your pocket - any boaters that moan, well, we'll just lift their licence fees haha! It seems to be the same statement as put out by EA

Yes but for some reason I think your caravan is a "cool one" ? My younger daughter (5.8 y.o) keeps telling me to get a "camping car". Her mother tongue is French and this is French for campervan. I hate VWs but for a long time I have really liked the old Commers. I know they are old wrecks mainly and slow but I really like them. If I fall over a nice one I may be tempted.
