I don't mind a bit of plottin' & plannin' but I am also happy for someone else to arrange all this - it could get horribly complicated. We're flexible, so give me a call if you think I can help out. Which way will dogless be going to the L&L? We will pass definitely if via the 'North-West Frontier' (ie. Blackburn & Burnley). TB would struggle to get people from so far and wide in one place at one time. The 'banters' on CWDF had the same issue, even then people who say they are coming drop out at the last minute or don't turn up. It doesn't really need any planning as such - somebody just needs to pick a time date and a place and open it up. But I do think one so far North wouldn't even get off the ground if I'm honest.

well - we ARE going to be somewhere in the vicinity - given we've published our cruising time-table, we're going to stick to it whether we've got bookings or not... just in case someone decides last minute to come along and join us: www.narrowboatellis.com/2018-cruise-diary.html

Its too far north for me. Obviously the fact MJG said it would not get off the ground may indicate that he won't be there in which case I may theoretically be able to tolerate the high train ticket price and turn up. I'd rather sleep on the towpath in a sleeping bag than in a hotel..

Why is there a gap 22-29 June? I already made a rough calendar two weeks ago and I reckon we'll be in Gargrave by Wed 13th June. Mon 4 - fly to Manchester/Leeds Tues 5 - work on boat (change coolant) Wed 6 - Brighouse Thurs 7 - Horbury Fri 8 - Stanley Ferry Sat 9 (all day Stanley Ferry) Sun 10 - Woodlesford Mon 11 - Esholt (visit relations in Baildon - footpath from canal) Tues 12 - Silsden Wed 13 - Gargrave

It's just the way it worked... we have "non-boaty"things to fit in around then so needed some time off.

Its too far north for me. No it isn't - 2.5 hours Euston to Manchester, then train to Huddersfield 30 mins. I have a few one-man tents (Hilleberg Akto being one) although Sainsburys car park surface may be a bit hard. How about flying Heathrow to Manchester?

If I can get some time off I may be able to steam around the west coast and come in my new yot.
I don't do airplanes. Trains are OK but its a long way and there be scary northeners up there offering tea to strangers.

I don't like sleeping in hedges but if it's a choice between shelling out for a hotel or sleeping on the towpath I would favour the latter. The best place to sleep is on a boat though. I do sometimes wonder if foxy has room up on the roof of his narrow boat. It would present a fairly high risk when getting up for a slash but at least there would not be anyone pissing onto you. Unless moored under a bridge. Hedges are very risky.

I'm sure there are some comfy hedges up there somewhere. I don't like sleeping in hedges but if it's a choice between shelling out for a hotel or sleeping on the towpath I would favour the latter. Back in the 1990s I used to do a lot of exhibition and roadshow work, and quite often there would be four and five star hotels booked for the crew, including myself. After two or three nights in one I said "Don't bother booking any more for me, I'll sleep in the truck from now on". Everybody thought I was mad, but my truck had a sleeper cab so was in essence my home, just like a very minimalist narrowboat really, whereas hotels felt unfriendly, cold and mercenary places. I used to get dirty looks and have even been stopped by the commissionaire on more than one occasion- "Excuse me Sir, are you staying here?" because I had had to service a generator or somesuch that day and my hands and face were dirty. So I'm with you on this one.

Gagrave is doable for me, 2hrs 40 minutes Peterborough - Leeds Leeds Gargrave. Not too dear either
Time is the biggest problem for me, it's in short supply and a very expensive commodity at that!

I'm only going if Martin is going to be there, I have a weeping fistula on my anus and need a nurse to regularly change the dressing.

Magnetman is welcome to the floor in our kitchen. I also don't mind him sleeping on the roof, we can run a couple of those truck ratchet straps cross the railings so he won't roll into the canal. However, who can say if our boat is at the same place as the meeting? I understand the sleeping in a truck cab - our bed in the boat is much nicer than to be found in any 5-star hotel, and I also like sleeping in my old brown tent.
I'd suggest there's nothing wrong keeping the idea of a meeting in mind, and giving the ideas a good shaking in May. But it would need to be planned fairly well - good location, good food, good drink. And bear in mind that it could be raining.
