With regard to spending money you have not got, C&RT seems quite happy to have borrowed and spent £163 million (soon to be £213m) it has not got. This will not be spent repairing Marple or anything else. The fact is that C&RT is more interested in growing its assets than maintaining its waterways. [ This is the worrying aspect of the whole debacle, the only thing Crt have to secure loans is the property. So these loans are going to lead to a massive sell off of property at some stage. Anybody can see what's happening if they bother to look into it. Parry really has sold the future of the network, it's like another carillon it's allowed to go on while people just look the otherway.

In the Minutes of the NINF meeting on 10 February:
“There was discussion on the concerns about CRT apparently selling off sites of heritage significance. CRT's Peter Walker discussed the process and assured members that every effort was made to protect such sites. However, he also added that CRT was facing massive funding shortfall when the government grant ran out.”
That is an interesting snippet; ‘every effort to protect such sites’ is an acknowledgement that ‘sites of heritage significance’ need protection but are being sold off despite that effort.
The additional comment reference funding shortfall sounds as though it is an excuse/reason for the failure, even though he refers to future shortfall.
If, as seems reasonable to infer, current lack of funds is responsible for the perceived necessity of selling off sites of heritage significance, what protection will be available ‘when the government grant ran out’?
Despite the warning flags that this ought to have waved in peoples’ faces, everybody except NABO were fully supportive of CaRT taking on the responsibility for the EA navigations.

I presume no one stopped to ask where will the money come from when they have sold all the property.
