Contractors were dredging the stretch from Nuneaton towards the Anchor Inn at Hartshill. Good to see, and only held us up ten minutes. It needs doing too. We were dragging the bottom until we reached this stretch. We got serviced by Auriga near Marston junction. Goodness knows how he's been managing fully laden. Lovely sunny day's cruise Rog

I remember dredging taking place on the Coventry canal around there when John Smith (Labour leader) died. I was boating in the area and link his death with dredging machines.
Istr there was a new marina being put in as well.

Very slowly north towards the L&L.
No real plans or itinerary, as we'll no doubt have to pop home regularly in view of Jane's old Mum's condition.
Definitely turning left at Fradley, but that's the only definite so far.
I'm sure you'll catch and over take us, but I'll buy you a pint if you promise to leave the knife at home.

Rog Maybe, I'm almost certainly going to push off next week and I'll be turning left at Fradley but then left again at Great Haywood I think. The knife will be at home.

Are 'contractors' cheaper than CRT's 'in house' staff? Perhaps, if they are using East European labour at £1 per hour. I'm not sure they have any inhouse staff or equipment left. Kris may have a better idea. I know they no longer operate chain saws routinely, for fallen trees, but call contractors in. I believe the original idea was that it would be cheaper. I fear the loss of in house skills and knowledge is a bigger problem than costs. Rog

But for all the big contracts it's hired in along with operative. In some cases the kit they hire back. Is the kit they've sold off. How that can be cheaper I don't know, but as you say it's the loss of the skills that is most worrying.

Sounds like a left at Gt Haywood too then.
We love a trip to Penkridge market so no hardship.

Actually I've just checked and the stoppage at Stoke (Cockshute's Lock) runs from the 6th to the 16th March so you'll get through if you are quick although there are numerous other stoppages on the T&M over the next month.

Quick?
We don't do quick.
Besides Turner's is a good shout.

Well, I'll post here when I set off but I'm thinking early next week and if I catch up with you I'll stop off for a beer providing you promise not to nick my boat.

More good news.
Amazingly we approached Atherstone locks with fingers crossed, hoping there'd be a mooring at the top, as the mud on the town moorings last winter was terrible.
Can you believe there wasn't a single boat moored. Never seen it like that, mind you it seems very quiet this year so far.
Later we went to look what the town moorings were like, and somebody has been busy putting in a proper surfaced path. They've only done half the length of the pound so far, but it's much, much better. You can moor there and keep clean. Great work, hopefully by C&RT.
