A couple of days ago I heard a sound like a machine gun. "Oh no" I thought "the Americans are here"
Then I listened again and it sounded like woodpecker. I had a look round (in a park beside a football pitch) . a woodpecker was pecking the metal shield on one of the high up flood lights.
I thought it might have been a mad bird but Apparently its a mating call so it was a clever or maybe isolated bird..

Moored in Paddington a few years ago and there was a great spotted woodpecker drumming in one of the few mature trees left growing through all the concrete canalside.
It's impressive how nature learns to adapt around us.

I was listening to two woodpeckers yesterday as I walked the mutt - they were either having an argument or were 'eyeing' each other up...

we've got one that does the same on the metal part of a telegraph pole outside our boat... if he moved 1 inch to the left it wouldn't hurt his head so much - although the pole might come down...
