I think the big difference between cheerleading in the US, from where the practice originates, and cheerleading in the UK is that in the US being a cheerleader is something that virtually every young teenage girl aspires to be whereas in the UK it is something that only a social misfit would be remotely interested in doing and as a result there is a significant gulf in the aesthetic qualities of the girls who do it in those nations. Having said that, I don't really find the Barbie doll appearance of American cheerleaders appealing, give me Eve Muirhead clutching a broom over that anytime.
