I posted this clip of the water chute on another thread. Wicksteed history is potted here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wicksteed_ParkA fine engineer who made money on things like this. www.wicksteed.com/I've been going to the park since I was a kid, it's a great place for toddlers to pre teen children along with a nice bit of parkland to get some fresh air. wicksteedpark.org/They recently built a replica of the original slide, modern clothes and a not exactly highly polished surface meant it was more a stuck than a slide The park trust are spending a lot of money restoring and replacing original features of the park. I discovered this on our last visit, I vividly remember it from my childhood - the brass plaque on the front read 'Wicksteed Engineering, Kettering, 1971' imagine how many people have had enjoyment out of it over the years. On a boaty front they used to have a paddle trip boat called the African Queen and an ex WW2 DKW landing craft that used to zip round the lake. Both sadly long since gone. Very hard to find photos online of both. There is over 100 years of history on the place so it's no good me trying to cram it all on here in a few paragraphs. Suffice to say Wicky's is about the only thing Kettering has going for it, Old man Wicksteed was a legend in his own lifetime (and beyond!) and his legacy continues to bring joy to people - top bloke 👍🍻

I went to school just down the road at Kettering High(as it was then)..Wickies I knew well..have taken grand daughter once. Used to love the boating lake..quite possibly it was my introduction to boats as a child when mum and dad took us. We lived in Oundle so Kettering daily for school quite a trek.

We come across the Wicksteed battering ram horses here and there on our travels. Last one I remember was Abingdon. Amazingly dangerous equipment you could break the door of a vault with but they still allowed. I quite like this as it shows that elfin safety has not taken over everything yet.
One of our local playgrounds has recently been condemned and removed partly because of a child death caused by faulty wooden framing on a swing in another park in the same borough. . Wondering who they will employ to replace it with new equipment. A lot of them seem to be by a German company these days which seems a shame . don't mention the war!
