Just seen a snippet on the local news. A 35m all wood single masted yacht being built and is going to have all electric drive the battery bank is recharged by a windmilling prop and 5 hours sailing will produce enough to recharge the batteries fully. They seemed to think that electric drive on a boat is a first for them (deluded)

I suppose if its a large diameter propeller and a small battery bank and the electric motor(s) is solely for docking purposes (like an auxiliary outboard would be for smaller boats) then its plausible.
I use remote control aircraft props on my electric kayak. Settled on a 8x6 nylon two blade prop it is very efficient indeed. I don't do any regen with it but given correct design I think what is being described is possible but not for extensive use of the motor(s).

Ampair made a towable generator for yachts [sort of a roundabout way of generating from wind]. In fact they made one model which could be used either in the rigging or towed in the water, depending on whether you were moored or under sail.

Seems good value, given the high retail cost advertised, though I cannot see what the output is.
