Not as long as our previous tales. With schools here being closed last week, it was back to the boat. I had thought to take only panoramic photos just for fun, and I have partly managed this, but it was snowing often and I don't want the camera lens to get wet as it retracts automatically (on an in-built timer and I don't know if I can prevent that from happening) and will drag water into the camera. So just 23 photos this time. I decided, as there were not so many, then to put them directly visible here from Imgur rather than via my Google Photos account, which would be accessed by clicking on the link.
Having been to Hebden Bridge & back already 6 times, from Sowerby Bridge, which entails the slight inconvenience of booking the Tuel Lane lock (deepest in the country), we decided to go the other way through Elland to Brighouse for a change. Previously having done that in that direction just once before, and not really concentrating on the scenery/route (we had Japanese visitors driving our boat with us then, in July 2016).
York railway station. Flew into Heathrow and took the 1145 Inverness-bound train to York. Non-stop, just a couple of hours. We spotted boats on the River Great Ouse just to the south of Huntingdon, a glimpse of the Sheffield & S Yorks Navigation at Doncaster, and the Aire & Calder Navigation at Great Heck (where we had been last Summer on the boat going to/from Goole).
Then it was a train to Leeds, and another train via Bradford and Halifax to Sowerby Bridge.
The boat smelt fine inside, no mouldy or damp pongs. The engine room had water on the floor but this was caused by a leaf blocking the scupper tube (the v-drains had filled and rainwater had poured over). I had a go at tightening the alternator belt (I think it's better), mopped up the water and wiped the engine room floor with kitchen towel. I went to Tesco's, bought four 5-litre transparent water containers, tipped the water down a drain so they were lighter to carry, and we sucked up 20 litres of diesel from the bottom of our fuel tank; three bottles looked OK, one was 'murky'. We will pour the OK bottles back in Summer, after having stood for 3 months, and through a filter.
View from the front of our boat at our parking spot, at Shire Cruisers' basin.
An hour east from Sowerby Bridge and you come to the top of the three Salterhebble Locks. Turn right for those. Under the bridge for the Halifax arm, which is just 5 minutes' drive to the end.
The basin between Salterhebble Middle & Lower locks.
Long Lees Lock, just after Salterhebble. Elland still ahead.
I think this was between Park Nook Lock and Cromwell Lock. Elland now behind, Brighouse ahead.
