Looks a bit short to me. More likely to be a gearchange lever I would say.

Or the handle for the clutch on a large deck winch. Or not off a boat. Its a nice object

I have (somewhere tucked away under the flooring) a similar lever that was the throttle lever for Sabina's Glennifer
I must dig them out and take a photo to post.

Thanks for the replys, i knew I couldn't place it off any barge that I'd seen.

That's interesting and thinking about it don't the Gleniffers have a wheel for gear change? A picture of your lever would be interesting.
I was thinking of the gear change lever you sometimes see on L&L boats but kris would have seen similar if it was one.

My own boat had one when it had a 2lw installed.

I'm not arguing with John on this but it does seem a bit over the top for a speed lever. I wouldn't have thought it would need to be that big.

All things considered, and if it is in fact off a barge of some sort, I'd say the likeliest use would have been as an engine throttle control, . . . something of a very similar size/length was commonly used for that on barges fitted with Gardner L3 type engines, from the 4's in the ''Duker's'' (Parelia, Parfield, Parcastle etc., etc.) to the 5's in the ''Selby's'' (BOCM fleet at Selby) and the more numerous 6's and 8's that were found in other fleets.
I'd rule out it being a gears lever off a Leeds and Liverpool boat, . . all of those I've ever seen, on wooden or steel/iron boats, were solid steel round bar set at an angle on a vertical shaft coming up through the engine casing top, close to the after edge of it.
Whatever it is, the seller has certainly got a sense of humour about what it's worth !

This got me wondering about a mystery object which I found with the magnet a while ago. I'm not really bothered about it but have been unwilling to push it back in the cut.. Does anyone know what it might be ? I at first thought it was a goggle pin from a tug (sticking up pins which prevent the tow rope from coming too far forward and interfering with the steering area) but would have expected those to be more securely fixed. I'm pretty sure the L&L gear levers would have had a square socket which this doesn't have. Mystery object. Approx 2ft long

No thread but looking closely there is a small groove in it so it could have been mounted in some sort of bearing And what appears to be a "round boss" is actually flat on the side not visible in my original picture.
