I suspect there will be a whole lot more of this sort of thing with the rebranding. CRT are going to have to reach out to the public and dumbing down is one way to achieve this. Look out for -every lock draining stoppage- turning into a public exhibition. Its started already. that's why paddles are left broken its to provoke failure then get publicity for crt "sorting it".
Next thing there will be local newspaper headlines "Canal Charity in emergency repair of failed lock mechanism in height of holiday season" failing to mention that one paddle was broken for 2 years and there were only two paddles at that end of the lock so failure was inevitable.
there is a good reason to have two paddles and its not so it looks better.

Perhaps the beams of Stanthorne and Wardle Locks should be carved with: ' When your boat begins to shiver, that's the canal going into the river! '

Interesting article, and it does make the point (obvious once it's been pointed out I suppose) that it wasn't so much the ropes which cut these grooves but rather the dirt and sand which became trapped in them.
