It's raining again. As soon as it eases off we're leaving the charms of Westport lake to head to the tunnel. You can tell this post is a forlorn attempt to delay our plunge into my personal Hades. It's our 39th wedding anniversary today. Poor planning to arrive at Kidsgrove and a visit to the laundrette on such a day. Hard to believe how sunny and spring like it was yesterday looking out at the rain. Supposed to be going for a run, but stuff that in this rain Rog

Stay in the boat, let the wife steer?
It what my mrs does at tunnels.

Just think of it as a long bridge.

I intensely disliked Harecastle Tunnel.
I'm normally Ok but the length and the changing roof profile royally pissed me off.
Give me something like Foulridge any time where at least you can (literally) see light at the end of the tunnel.
I also managed to ding the cabin front corner and rip the canopy which peed me off too. I didn't take it forward and down as I subsequently have seen other boaters do.
hate it.

Trip advisor shows it as 4/5 so you are all wrong, it must be a great experience.

You'll be fine as long as you don't touch the sides.

I might have to do the dreaded tunnel in a few weeks. I'd hoped to head to the Shroppie the other way but the Middlewich breach has put paid for that. Thing is, my solar panels are fitted crosswise, across the full width of the boat. These are on wooden frames. The effect is to raise the height of the cabin sides by around 4 inches. Reckon I'll get through OK or will I be scraping from side to side all the way through?

Depends on by how much (if anything) they protrude beyond the cabin side/roof edge or if they would be the first point of contact before any metal cabin if you run off course. You should be fine if it's just a straight four inch increase. If unsure check with the tunnel keepers before you enter but I would say you should be OK.

There are good guages at both ends, and I didn't need to remove the chimney or my watering can or keb.
Don't let me put you off. We were through all alone in 34 mins.
I actually think the water level was lower than my last trip, as the low roofed stretch in the centre wasn't as bad as previous trips.
Moored at Red Bull now.
Spoken to a couple coming up from Middlewich who said they never saw a moving boat yesterday.
Loads went by at Westport so they must all have turned up the Maccy.

Thanks for the replies. Fortunately, the panels have metal edges, they were designed to be used as part of a curtain walling system, so a slight contact with stone hopefully won't result in the sound of exploding toughened glass! I'll go up there and speak to the keepers.
