Hi all I'm still at the stage of planning to buy a nb ,need to tart up and flog the flat first and hopefully be living onboard by next spring. But I was wondering what you full timers do about your music set up? I do listen to music a lot so a fairly decent set up on board will be important to me and not just a portable radio /cd player. From reading I see that car stereos are popular but what else is there and what's best for power consumption? How about wireless Sonos etc? Do any of you manage play vinyl? I would like something that's controlled from my phone etc with all the wireless connections ie bluetooth,DNLA, casting etc and internet/DAB Radio Thanks in advance for your input

Hello I don't have a "system" myself but was once told by a knowleable live aboard electrician that car radios are very inefficient because there is no reason to have an efficient setup when the alternator is charging the battery anyway. Made sense. Depending on your charging regime and solar panels etc you could run a household type system through a decent inverter and have a good efficient setup.

Two portable radios here, run off AA batteries. One for the toilet - turn it up loud when you are in there!

Ok I thought it was best to have as many 12v appliances as possible. I do plan on CCing so won't be plugged into marinas and will have a good solar set up, I thought my home stereo would be overkill and draining, it's an AV receiver home cinema/music system but has all the wireless stuff I need so would be handy if I could use it on the boat. Cheers :-)

Welcome to the house of fun thingamajig.
We have a car radio/cd player with speakers in the roof along the length of the boat.
It's simple enough and 12v.

Thankyou Rog Do you find that it drains the batteries or do you not use it that much so you wouldn't notice. I listen to music for at least a couple of hours a day sometimes all day so am interested to find out? thanks

Never noticed a problem, but I don't have a battery monitor. Had the boat 13 years and it's never been an issue.
Greater minds than mine can tell you for sure, but I don't believe it's a massive drain on the batteries.

Hi there and welcome to the mad house thingamajig !!! I have 240 available all the time for fridge freezer etc so the extra power for a smallish hi fi system is neither here or there ..... but my boat is not typical. Oddly while typing, this is playing in the background ...... well fairly loud actually

Will you be on a 240v hook up or cruising all year so relying on 12v and invertor?
If out cruising and on batteries only,
Summer with solar you will be fine, just do an audit and match in/out.
Winter is always the tricky one, will need to run the engine more which is fine if you have the time in the day, but when working 9-5 it gets tricky to replace lost power in the short time between getting home and 8pm when if moored near anyone else you should not run the engine.

Get a decent inverter.

Depends what your home amp is, and how much you'll use it/plan on generating that power. Also, there's power loss from running the inverter to factor in if you go down that route. Alternatively, look at some of the Class D amplifiers, which are probably way more power efficient than your oversized home amp, and should also come with bluetooth/whatever else you're using.
At the moment I've got a TPA3116 based one, powered by a 12-20v DC-DC converter (think laptop power supply), hooked up to my old home mission bookshelf speakers (I had to get rid of the floorstanding ones due to running out of floor) . Power consumption is tiny, sound quality is almost as good as my home setup, and it runs all day off solar even in winter..

The deeper the frequencies and the louder you play it the more amps it'll use. I had a 40w/ch, some 3" mids and a 200w powered sub in my camper which would flatten an 85ah battery in about 6-8 hours at nowhere near as loud as it would go. Now I have 4" bass and can listen for...ages. You have to cut your cloth on 12v.

Cheers LG, yes I don't mean to crank it all the time it's just the warmth a better system produces But nice to take it up to eleven when the occasion arises ;-), I might just use a good portable radio for everyday use
