Just been reminded that as we left Westport lake, Stoke, to head to the tunnel, Jane made the fire up. Smokeless fuel, but it was a damp drizzly morning and the usual light smoke you get even with smokeless, was evident.
On arrival at the tunnel we were ushered straight in, but the tunnel keeper asked about the smoke and suggested we damp the fire down. We explained it was fully shut down and it would undoubtedly clear pretty quickly.
He was happy and said he was raising the issue only because he was required to, we were going in alone so no problem to anyone else.
We transited the tunnel in 34 mins without problem.
As we emerged, the tunnel keeper gave us a bollocking about our 'smokey chimney'.
Now, it really wasn't smokey (I've seen engines much worse) and in any case the huge fan is operated for the purpose of extracting fumes.
I guess the tunnel man was just 'having a minute' as is his right.
However having seen boats where the occupiers appear to be burning sheep, and some engines (usually historic types) with very smokey exhausts, I wondered if anyone had ever been refused passage, or know of someone who has?

When I went through the Harecastle I was fortunate as there was no one in front of me so I was able to get the hammer down. With a small boat (Shapfell is only 25 foot) if you keep the speed up then the wake tends to naturally centre you in the tunnel. The only times I have had problems keeping in line, transiting tunnels, is when I have had to creep along behind a snailboat

Indeed there wasn't......hence the title.
To be honest, I was surprised it was mentioned by either, as it wasn't really smoky. It's more like steam isn't it.
Must have been a really quiet day.
That's why I wondered if anyone had been refused entry.

Still, you were in the wrong, you knew you were in the wrong, and got caught. We installed some smoke alarms in the Foulridge Tunnel last June as we went through, so try it in there and you'll alert everybody in the cafe!

I went through the UK's most crap canal tunnel yesterday. I didn't bother turning my tunnel light on or extinguishing the fire.

34 mins is our best time. We've done 34 mins several times but never beaten it. Obviously you can only crack on if you're alone......and of course if you're sure you're not going to bounce off the sides. We followed a boat through once and it took just over an hour. Mind you the boat hit every brick...both sides I think Rog

I can't remember what my quickest time through Harecastle Tunnel was. I did it once, single-handing, and on the way out the tunnel keeper said "That's as fast as anyone's ever done it". I get the idea it was 26 minutes but I could be wrong.

So we're bragging about how fast we can sail our boats now are we? Not really. The worst thing to do with Harecastle Tunnel though is go through it too slowly because that's when you cause damage to both the boat and the tunnel. So I always go through it at normal canal speed.

So we're bragging about how fast we can sail our boats now are we? I think you'd struggle to sail in there.....even with the fan behind you None of it was meant to be boastful, just a conversation. Harecastle's the only tunnel I time....cos I really don't like it. It's too low in the middle unless you're only 5ft8ins. Rog
