Woke up this morning and the solar had packed in, i.e controller/moniter had no power. After clearing the engine bay to get at it all and fixed loose battery connection all was well.(ran lump for couple of hours) all good and charging until...voltage good....amps zero, monitor showing gradually depleting. Ran engine for five mins then things back to normal again
Thoughts please. I have noticed in the past that if the batteries have been low similar symptoms have shown from the solar until a half decent charge is in from the alternator.
The irony of the sun coming out is not lost on me

I know less than feck all about solar. I'm sorry you're having trouble, and if I write this, it will bump you up. Hopefully someone sensible will comment Rog

If no one more intelligent than me comes along before tomorrow.
I'd try covering the solar panels and see if the discharge rate goes up, could be a failed diode. Don't do anything else though before someone who knows what they are talking about comes along.

Maybe time to buy a new controller? Mine will charge batteries from flat, but before that check all the contacts on the wires, damp could have caused black death on the copper wiring causing high resistance

HR on terminals or fecked controller sounds good to me! π Loose battery terminals? Why would this or why would you allow this to happen??

There's no mystery, it's simply time to buy a new solar panel, a new controller, a new monitor, and some new batteries. Oh, and a new alternator.
This is what everybody is thinking, and what the OP knows, yet I am the only one brave enough to say it.

It seems unlikely that the whole lot has failed. Of course most of this stuff is made in proc these days and the slitty eyed chinkies are devious (and slimy) so they could easily have built in some built-in obsolescense (?) into their worthless bin filling crap. So you could be right but I'd bet a pound to penny you are wrong.

Some controllers get confused if they are connected to panels but not the battery, then connect to the battery. So try disconnecting the panels, then disconnect the controller from the batteries. Wait a min then connect controller to battery followed by the panels. Make sure the panels are covered or itβs dark before touching the connections.

I should have known better than posting a question so close to the weekend. Thanks everyone else too I don't mean to be mean!

Wondering if itβs more likely to be a bad connection, which when rattled by the engine running, fixed itself (temporarily). As a general point if the panels are working hard and the battery is suddenly disconnected, this can fry the controller.
