I took the yot for sea trials from Brentford to Henley over the weekend and a problem turned up. The alternator Mount came loose. I was aware of it being a bit bit naughty as the tensioner arm has been previously welded. and happy for it to show up as an issue and happy it caused problems just as i arrived at my destination anyway.
Turns out someone had used bolts rather than studs to attach the mount to the side of the block (aluminium). This is the wrong thing and (obviously) stripped the threads.
So I am going to put helicoils in and studs so it can be tightened with nyloc nuts.
I've not done helicoils before. Are there any pitfalls or tricks to avoid or take advantage of? Other than limiting the depth of the drill bit with a cork.

I still have a bag of bits to get to you....
The most important thing is not to rail the drill into the block, a stop is essential, a cork is a bit high risk tbh.
I can't remember if the Kubota has a M8 or M10 stud for the alternator, no matter, I will chuck a hose clip that suites a helicoil tapping drill for both in the outstanding ferrules I promised you.
You have got to pay particular attention to keeping the drill and tap square, other than that it's a piece of cake.
As it happens bonehead is out of happy pills so I am set free from my prison tomorrow and should be OK to go see the post mistress.

Are there any pitfalls or tricks to avoid or take advantage of? Like Gazza said: You have got to pay particular attention to keeping the drill and tap square. In addition (depending on the depth of hole), make sure you also use the plug tap after the taper (1st) tap. This will ensure you have cut a proper thread all the way, for the length of the helicoil insert. Be firm (but don't force it to much) on installation. And don't forget to snap the tang off when installed. PM sent with Tel# if you have any questions.

@gazza Two M8 studs but someone had used bolts which stripped the threads. Tensioning arm also snapped (its been broken and welded before so definitely a preexisting problem). I'm hoping to replace that arm with a bottle screw plus may need longer belt although it was on the maximum "reach" already so the pictured bottle screw might just do it.

Here is what Stumpy is on about. www.afsrecoil.net/en/Products/Taps.htmlMost kits come with a pilot nose tap rather than taper, intermediate and bottom. Some well shagged holes in Ali require no drilling prior to tapping, I wouldn't chance it on an engine block though! As it's cast you should get on OK, the high carbon content makes it fairly free machining. You may need a longer belt to use that bottle screw with any degree if success, it's tight for space around the timing chest too.

Get an alternator adjuster from a Jaguar XJS, threaded rod with the correct ends should be available from a scrapie near you.

I can't remember the last time I saw one on the road. It doesn't seem all that long ago 6 pot XJS in Jewish Racing Gold were ten a penny!

Both SORN on private land with mildew on. I did see an XJS on the road the other day in Henley but can't remember the last time before that. They do seem rare now.

Keep your eye out for Postman Pat. Q: What do you call Postman Pat when he retires?
