Unbelievably as I was approaching the top Barrowford lock, and Jane was walking the towpath towards it, I saw two weasels cross the lock tail bridge, then run down the field oposite, alongside the canal.
Terrific extended views of an animal that's rarely seen despite being fairly common.
I was able to point them out to Jane and a couple walking by too, so we all spotted them.
Sadly no photos, and even if I had I can't post them, sorry.
Only seen a weasel once before, so it was a definite highlight of the day.

A well-trained goshawk, belonging to Mr John Riley, of Putley Court, Herefordshire took 70 rabbits in fifteen days, killing ten on her best day. This was her third season. In her first year she took 110 rabbits, 2 pheasants, 13 water-hens and 1 rat; in her second season 130 rabbits, 2 pheasants, 3 water-hens and one stoat.

After working up through Wigan, Blackburn and Burnley, the sight of two weasels certainly lets you know you've arrived in 'the countryside'.
It's amazing in the twelve years since we've been here, how developments at Colne are stretching out to the canal. There are houses just a field or so away, and a retail park only a twenty minute walk away.
The feeling of isolation here has gone, but it's still terrific scenery.
