How about asking Castle Marina how they are allowed to do this, and ask to see the contract / written agreement? do you think they would show me the agreement they have? Probably not because as soon as you ask they know someone is onto their 'iffy' practice, and they will make some excuse about 'being too busy at the moment'. But then sometimes avenues of enquiry have to be gone up all the way to the end, even though you suspect it's going to be a blunt end. I think what you're asking is interesting - I sure would like to see how marinas have nabbed part of the towpath for themselves for making money. You are quite right in pointing out the many freedoms that are being sinisterly eroded.

But then cart seem to be getting away with quite a lot of dubious practices at the moment. Unless boaters wake up and start standing up to them, this lifestyle that we enjoy will just be a thing of the past.

It's only fair to point out that although based at castle marina, this isn't the same company who own the marina.

In Sheffield the VMs are administered by CV Marine. Are they charged for? 48 hours free, then you talk to them. At least that was how it was 5 years ago. When we asked to stay longer they said we could for free provided we kept our noses clean. Quite what they thought two 65 year old were going to do I don't know.

I would say the only way for that to happen is moor there and refuse to pay. invite them to recover their money in court. it would have to be produced then but we know the likelihood of them going to court incase they lose.
