here in Fenland, Fox Boats, Willy Watt/ Blackthorn Marina, Oundle Marina, Fish and Duck, Westview Marina, you will pay the boats worth rather than the inflated going rate. A week or so gets you back to civilisation at the cost of some food, diesel and time. And a damn good boat trip if the weather looks after you ! A trip from the fens to what you called "civilisation" is a joy in either direction as long as its not pissing it down and/or flooding.

I really liked the Nene when I went to St Ives from Gayton via Salters Lode in the early 00s.
OK do there were some cars dumped in a lake at Wellingborough but its basically a very nice river if there is not too much water about. It was on the Nene somewhere that I watched some barn owls murdering mice one evening.
Enjoyed that.

Brampton Mill to the South West of the station - lovey spot, Portholme Meadow to the South East, A cracking run from St Ives to St Neots.

I found the whole of the river system a joy to explore but if I had to pick a favourite it would be the area round the Hemmingfords www.flickr.com/photos/68639646@N08/shares/A15269

Not until those herds of spiders are properly culled. I'm not kidding, Mrs Loafer was hoovering up to 18 per evening, from our cream cabin walls. It has changed me as a person!
