Oh dear, trouble near Brinklow: βUninspiring vegan afternoon tea left a nasty tasteβ (snip) The scones were disgusting - they crumbled apart on cutting. They were obviously stale although had been warmed up to disguise the fact. We had to eat them with a spoon! The jam tasted nice however. The coconut cake was vile, what looked like a mini rumbaba was stale, the chocolate slice had a very bitter taste. The only two items in the entire tea that were vaguely acceptable was the honeycomb and fruit jelly. (snip) The 2 stars I have given are for the very nice strawberry and mango tea, the honeycomb, the jelly and the nice walk we had around the grounds prior to our tea. We had quite a chuckle also at the Fawlty Towers element of our experience! I suggest the catering staff/management take an interest in vegan cooking/baking as it is a growing requirement and it is not difficult but may take a little imagination, which was sadly lacking yesterday. Just Google 'Wallflower Kitchen vegan scones with clotted cream'. I do not recommend Coombe Abbey for a vegan or non-vegan afternoon I did google "Wallflower kitchen" and one of the links was honest enough to put "clotted cream" in quotes, as it's apparently made from coconuts, grown no doubt in former rain forest where the animals have been evicted. I'm still trying to work out how "honeycomb" is compatible with veganism, though.

It's all gone very quiet.
Are you sunbathing and quaffing beer at the Back Swan, or have you moved on?
We've moved down to Saltaire, the new rings just beyond Salts Mill.
Enjoyed our theatre trip.
Bingley's a pleasant little town. Easy walk back to visit the town and shop from the Fishermans.
Off for a walk around Saltaire now.

Watching this thread with interest, was supposed to do the caldon last year but didnt manage it, spoke to the mrs on the weekend and we decided to pencil it in for next year. I was going to do the Caldon last year but changed my mind at Etruria Junction and went to the River Weaver instead. It was a brilliant trip, Anderton Boat Lift and all but this year it will be the Caldon. I'm between Fradley Junction and Armitage now, had a lazy couple of days with only short movements but I'll try to pick the pace up a bit now. My aim is to reproduce this photo, if I can I'll be chuffed to bits.Β Did you use a SLR camera and a tripod to get that? Good picture, possibly worthy of the calendar

But think - if Stabby had his boat in that position with a steam train passing - it could be in the Thunderboat Calendar 2019 - and we'd all be chuffed to bits!

Did a run from King's Bromley to Weston today, might get to Etruria tomorrow or I might just call it a day at Stone, which I always find pleasant.

We arrived in Leeds at noon, in pouring rain. Hey ho, we're not made of sugar.
Granary wharf was full but we're moored on rings outside the Hilton Hotel.
Had a shower and found it slightly odd to be getting dried after, and seeing diners having luch in their dining room. Fortunately (for them) they can't see in.
I wonder if Stabby's busy fighting off marauders as he passes Hanley Park.
Perhaps more likely he's still in Stone enjoying the ambience of the town.

Stopped last night at Etruria and didn't think I would move today as the weather was awful this morning but the rain did ease off about midday so I did a move to Milton to clear the badlands of Stoke/Hanley etc and tomorrow should be a fine day so I'll crack on a bit then.
