I'm assuming CRT have forgotten all about that hole in the canal on the Middlewich Branch - I haven't seen any more videos with that woman in the white hard hat saying how fantastic and marvellous and generous people are digging for their small change behind the sofa - so it looks like it's gonna be unopened before September anyway.
So we're looking for a marina or parking place somewhere around the Staffs & Worcs Canal, with the idea being that, in October, we can shimmy up the Shroppie to Nantwich, and at Christmas enjoy the Shroppie coming back down, probably to the marina we'd have set off from, so they'd have our custom Aug-Oct and Jan-March.
Otherton looks like our best bet because Penkridge railway station is walking distance (2 miles) and thus handy for Birmingham airport, although of course by train you can get to Manchester/London too.
I know Telemachus said Otherton is close to the motorway and noisy, but does anyone here have experience of Great Haywood / Otherton / Hatherton marinas? Are there any other marinas / parking spots in that area. Public transport to them? Marinas seem to be easiest for us, CRT wants us to tell them where we are, we don't want any of the farmer's offside mooring and then the farmer telling us we should apply to CRT for an "end of garden licence".
We'll probably check these three out by car this Summer anyway, but I might write to them beforehand to see what kind of replies I get.

Telemachus 2 years ago said: "If you mean the northern M6/toll junction then there is Otherton (lots of motorway noise and a bit weird/unfriendly IMO), Great Haywood (bunch of whatsits, or at least that was how we felt when we visited looking to buy a boat)" and "there's the one at Calf Heath which seems friendly." (that's Hatherton).
Review about Otherton says:
Lyndsey Green 18th July 2015 Worst marina ive ever encountered. The owners are rude and they often try to rip you off. People on marina dont have a good word to say about them or place. Never any parking, moorings go up double after twelve months. Electric 50p a unit when it works and if u get it!!!!!! Pontoons all falling apart.place overgrown. Toilet isnt fit for a rat to wee in!!!!! No parking even though its £25 for a gate key! Boats dragged out of water, filled with putty and put back in to sink a further 5 times!!!!! Stear clear!!!!!!!
In the interest of Fairness another comment from someone: "I did speak to someone at Otherton and they seemed ok, cheap as well but they only have space for smaller boats at pres."
and: "How about Otherton Marina at Penkridge. No connection to us . Seems to be a few live aboard there , clean , tidy and helpful . Friends have had winter moorings there for several years and have had no complaints . Bunny ."

I stick with my opinion of Otherton. Gt Haywood is a big commercial marina and it probably depends on who you interact with - our interaction was negative but then again some folk seem happy there. Calf Heath I haven’t heard anything negative about, which is probably a good recommendation! I think, but could be wrong, that Hatherton and Calf Heath are different places despite being next to each other,

we don't want any of the farmer's offside mooring and then the farmer telling us we should apply to CRT for an "end of garden licence". No farmer would give a shit whether you paid CRT for a mooring licence.

Yes, but CRT would. We've gone through the "there's no such thing as end-of-garden-licences" vs "CRT will take you to Court, crush your boat, or give you the Evil Eye and hand out only a 6-month licence next time" scenario. I'm afraid CRT pulls the strings until I can find a rich Russian oligarch to put up our Court costs

It seems to me that Calf Heath & Hatherton are one and the same. Have sent an e-mail to Hatherton, let's see what they say.

I think that what confuses me is “calf heath marina complex” which is the other side of the arm and doesn’t seem to like boats, more of a pub/restaurant/event venue. They have a nice big NO MOORING sign. Lovely!
