Forecasters seem to be indicating that there is a prolonged spell of warm weather coming.
Maybe even a drought.
It seems to me this could have some far reaching consequences for an already tired canal system.
I wonder if it could even cause closure of some waterways. Low water and weed are problematic.

don't. the K&A is bad enough in normal summer's. End of the month we are finally going east to Newbury or reading and back.
there are already restrictions in place with the pumps at full capacity. you have to wait up to an hour for another boat to share with. it will only get worse.
the o my other option is to man up and venture if the canal and down to Bristol. saying that the kids really want to do bath deep lock. the other plus would be a beer with stumpy but we really want to go that west this time

Yes, it is making me wonder where we might end up this year. The original plan was to go to Liverpool via the SU then over the L & L round the North East a bit then back over the HNC. He last time we were on the western end of the L & L they started closing the locks due to drought so I don't want to go up Wigan only to find we have to go back or stay put somewhere.
Could do it the other way round and go up HNC first but fancied doing it East to West having gone the other way twice. I know water levels are never spectacular on the HNC but are they worse now. It may be that boat movements are never very high so lower reservoir levels won't have much effect.
Well probably wait until we are in Manchester when the situation will be clearer, ie worse, then make a decision.

We were told this morning that if we want to get over te L&L summit to the Burnley-Wigan side then to get moving today. Perhaps we'll be spending Christmas in Sheffield then...

We had set off for the K&A again but now realise that would be bad idea. We don’t want to end up getting stuck on there. When we did it 5 years ago it was still in slight flood in places. No problem getting back off then.
So the Thames ring it is. This time we’re doing it anti- clockwise. Just trying to decide whether to stay on the Thames leg for more than a week this time. Last time we shot through in a few days and didn’t really explore.
Anyone recommend any other good moorings on the Thames other than the locks? We have stayed over at Abingdon, Shillingford and Beale Park before.

It would change our plans a lot, going back East through Leeds. On Sunday 15th we can investigate the situation.

I got stuck at foullridge because of lack of water in a mild summer six years ago. So I dread to think what this year has done to the water levels.

Here ya go then Kris. This morning at Gargrave. Even the Witch can't get the boat to rock: I sometimes wonder why, when the water goes down, why the banks are so scruffy with blocks of stone just scattered higgledy-piggledy and not neatly built as a wall. Photo does not do justice - our pound (Gargrave's main drag) has clearly dropped. Yesterday when I went 300 metres to the water point backwards, our prop was just digging in bottom mud all the way - and the water level was higher then. Still, hire boats are coming through the locks one at a time instead of sharing.

The pound in Gargrave does that a lot - it's crazy... caused by one defective paddle I believe... Richard and I filled it the other Sunday morning when we ended up on our sides - of course THEN the pooor chap has to run water down from Bank newton which exacerbates the already low marton pound...

Paddle still broken. And yet we can put men on The Moon.

5 minutes ago - someone's stuck - look at the pointy end of boat to judge the angle.

That's where the boarding plank comes in handy To lever the boat off with.

Suddenly our boat crashed - water level rising. We're floating again!
