I heard or read somewhere that sometimes people would run large diameter ropes under the boat to encourage water to get into the mud and prevent the suction issue from occurring. Someone will say this is bollocks. I believe it . Most of the old Dutch working barges were round bilge, and we used to use thin steel cable to pull underneath the boats, in a sawing movement from bow to stern, which managed to do the trick of getting afloat again.
It was sometimes a bit scary as we let the water come up higher than de draft would be, to get more buoyancy, with the help of Archimedes.
Peter.

wasn't he the guy that said "screw that" ?? I have to say that I don't know the answer to your question John, thing is he died long before I was born, and none of my relatives ever talked about him.
The only word I do remember him saying was :"HEUREKA !"

My memory is badly failing John, I'd completely forgotten about this famous and very well know screw principle.
Glad you reminded me of this, will try to store it now in one of the hardly ever used parts of what's leftover of my brains.
Peter.

I'm buying a rope here in Lancaster today to stop us from getting 'sucked in' at Gargrave.
Talking of almost getting sucked in, some 'beggar' here in Lancaster asked me "Any change?" I said clearly not, I'm still working and you're still sitting on your arse.

wasn't he the guy that said "screw that" ?? Actually, according to some researchers, Nebuchadnezzar used what is now known as the 'Archimedes screw" to water the hanging gardens of Babylon millennia before the innovative Greek. The evidence is persuasive.

No, but I took the collective "we" to indicate the human race. Because the logical conclusion of your thinking would be that thunderboat hasn't put anybody on the moon either, or not that I'm aware of anyway. This needs to be sorted out asap. Who would like to go to the moon ? I can arrange it but I'm not going I will! I will! Pick me! Pick me!!!!

Guilty as charged Sir - where's the plank for me to walk ? I will get one set up for you when next back in Brentford. Just ensure your hepatitis jabs are up to date - although I have swum in the Brent often enough, my generation were built tougher, remember. Might be back down there on Thursday as it happens.depending on the tide timings and the probability of the plank being ready I might go to Limehouse instead. As I am incapable of planning anything more than about 20 hours in advance I have no idea what will actually happen .

Peter.
We use this principle to shift filler powder into our resin mixer. www.flexicon.com/Bulk-Handling-Equipment-and-Systems/Flexible-Screw-Conveyors/index.htmlIt raises the bulk powder 4m into the air - it's then dropped down a chute into the selected mixing tank. Good system.

They installed a couple of Archimedes screw generators into the weir by Eton college. In the hope that pointless toffs would fall off the bridge and get chewed up. But they failed to modify the bridge railings.
And a bit closer to home CRT use them to propel some of their workboats because apparently they can deal with weed.
